FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week Day 2 Was A Celebration Of Style That Is Greener, Vibrant And An Ode To Khadi With Kangana Ranaut As The Showstopper

FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week, day 2 was a celebration of Sustainable Fashion Day. From special initiatives to reinvent, India’s very own Khadi to taking a step forward towards a more green, sustainable world with efforts to reduce the piles of waste filling the landfills, labels from Payal Pratap, Ka-Sha to Anju Modi made sure sustainability looked stylish too. And here are the many showcases that caught our eyes.

Prama By Pratima Pandey

It was raining flowers at the showcase of Prama by Pratima Pandey. Dainty and dewy, the freshness of floral embroidery onto handwoven silk Chanderi, brought together interesting cuts and cutwork hemlines. Taking inspiration from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s protagonist from his classic novel Devdas (1917)– Paro, it aims to reinvent her fiery side through the line-up.

Diksha Khanna

Threadwork, headscarves, interesting half jackets and oversized pants, hit the stage for Dikhsha Khanna’s showcase at FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week. Venturing into androgynous styles, the fluid and trans-seasonal line-up, titled “Julley”, (Hello in Ladhaki), was inspired by the barren landscape of Ladhak. Incorporating the techniques of natural dyeing and eco-printing that stunningly sticks to the light fabric, the collection explored interesting construction, jacket designs and saree pairings, and I loved the printed strings attached to the cuff sleeves with silhouettes that observed a palette, easy on the eyes and skin too.

Antar Agni

Fierce and fast-paced, models paraded on the runway wearing label Antar Agni’s latest collaborative showcase with Adidas Originals. Bandhgalas, monochrome and multi-braids strutted collectively for the Antar Agni showcase. Headlined by simplistic designs, and  interesting hemlined eyewear, actress Shruti Haasan turned muse for designer Ujjawal Dubey and walked the ramp in a black bandhgala and pants. Bold graphic embroideries, asymmetrical shirt openings, made the perfect jodi with eco-conscious footwear, and I sure loved it.

Khanijo

Gaurav Khanijo’s Cirque Du’ Soul instantly surprised us on the runway with a burst of candy stripes, truckloads of balloons and classic high-pitched carnival melodies. With layering playing a vital role here, printed red shirts made vibrant, fresh teams with quirky pantsuits, that featured beautiful thread work motifs replete on the fabric. An artful streetwear collection, Gaurav brought back the spirit of the candy reds, as he gave a fun update to the signature red circus pants and dungarees. All the looks were paired with Adidas Originals’ eco-conscious footwear range, which seemed like a match made in heaven with the collection in place.

Fashion For Good

Three designer showcases walked the runway for RISE Worldwide X Fashion For Good presentation on Sustainable Fashion Day. Playing with alternative, more conscious fabric choices for their line-up, were designers Divyam Mehta, Karishma Shahani Khan & Nitin Bal Chauhan. Replete with natural dying and printing options, the first line-up to hit the ramp was by designer Divyam Mehta. Tapping to the tunes of dark, and muted shades, Divyam’s melodic spin to the Dongria Kondh tribe silhouette was styled with multiple metallic face piercings and represented the simplicity of nature. The second showcase by Ka-Sha, played the opposite tune to Divyam’s world of design and brought together a showcase, filled with pastel hues, artistic hemlines, stripes and smocking used in a multitude of silhouettes. Styled further with citrus coloured stockings and blush pink loafers, Ka-Sha’s Manthan was sprightful.
The last showcase in the line-up was surprising and intriguing. Opening the show with ear-splitting sounds of the road and continuous honking, models walked the runway in designs that was marinated with a thought-provoking message. Extensive mechanical headgears, extreme flounce, and charcoal threads curated two and three-dimensional embroideries,  with carbon– Graviky ink, used for printing and painting.

Vaishali S Couture

Gathering inspiration from the varied weaves of India, Vaishali S Couture’s “Fil Rouge” collection was replete with creatively aligned statement lines, on a variety of deep red, maroon, earthy blue, and shimmering gold. Drapes turned showstopper for the designer’s pretty yet powerful showcase. She used the technique of layering as a mode of re-usability and maximum circularity. Sprinkled with the feature of versatility, Vaishali turned festive mode on, with structured collars, lehenga and saree designs. And Indian Art and Design collector Shalini Passi, headlined the showcase in a stunning white attire featuring the designer’s statement motifs and dramatic lines.

Payal Pratap

Prints spoke in length for Payal Pratap and Bemberg’s showcase on day 2. Titled–’Java,’ print play turned the protagonist for the lovely showcase, which presented a heavy blend between traditional Batik, and the lovely Chintz printing. From Indian ethnic silhouette styles, print on print sets, floral silk scarves to intricate drapes, Payal’s collection was styled with matching bucket hats and cowboy scarves. Welcoming summer and the idea of sustainability, Payal’s signature designs came handcrafted over Bemberg, cupro-fibre fabric which is biodegradable and earth-friendly.

Khadi presentation

A collective of some of India’s leading designers, filled the stage with voices of sustainable fashion with a modern upgrade given to India’s dearest Khadi. The collection was presented by French designer Mossi Traoré, and Indian minds like Abhishek Gupta Benares, Anavila, Anju Modi, Charu Parashar and Rina Dhaka, in collaboration with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Giving the ‘Fabric Of Freedom’ a striking and refreshing treatment, all the designer showcases weaved their signature aesthetics with the fabric. From Jamdani motifs, to Khadi silk, the textured eco-friendly Khadi was dipped into hues of nature, and colours of spice. Taking the centre stage were also interesting silhouette designs, right from sarees, Khadi bride line-up, to breezy fabric construction that played with the textured. And turning muse for Khadi India for this wonderful initiative was actress Kangana Ranaut who walked the ramp in a white Jamdani saree, paired with emerald encrusted jewels, and a white trench coat.

Satya Paul by Rajesh Pratap Singh

The closing show by Satya Paul was indeed a great end to day 2 of FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week 2022. Dramatic prints, intricate detailing, and cinched waists, it was a print party for Satya Paul by Rajesh Pratap Singh. Titled– New Order, the line-up incorporated the essence of maximalism with R’ElanTM’s sustainable fabric choices. Inspired by Art Nouveau, freedom of expression dwelled at its core. From draped skirts, geometric prints, styled with floral printed Balaclava masks, a rather interesting pair for a saree, right? From muted colours to vibrant teal blue and red, every shade brought the power of art back on the runway and instantly turned into a lively dance fest as the label welcomed invitees to groove by the swimming pool turned runway.
