Being an avid reader of fashion’s long lost history and names that weaved the glorious past of this glimmering world, fashion documentaries serve as a window for me to flip through some old pages and know in-depth about these stalwarts. From the House Of Gucci to the unheard story of Ralph Lauren’s life behind closed doors, we have a list of some fashion docu-series and movies that offer a peek into the lives of Fashion’s OG players. So let’s dig right in?
House Of Gucci
The first name on my list has to be without a doubt–House Of Gucci. Starring Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Adam Driver and Al Pacino in pivotal roles, the film unravels the story behind, greed, murder, and glamour that ran through the many instances in the Gucci family legacy. The film is an adaptation of Sara G. Forden’s 2001 non-fiction book and takes the viewers through the incidents that led to the death of former head Maurizio Gucci (played by Adam Driver), plotted by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (played by Lady Gaga). Halston
Designer Roy Halston Frowick aka Halston ruled American fashion in the early 1970s and is still known for some of the world’s iconic style moments, and dressing up names like former US president John F Kennedy’s wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, actress Bianca Jagger, and Liza Minnelli. Halston takes the viewers through the life and work of the designer, whose life takes a spin when he is forced to play a gamble to save his design empire. You can watch the series on Netflix.
McQueen
The 2018 documentary on the life of designer Lee Alexander McQueen takes us through his childhood, modes of inspiration and life in the business of fashion. Through a series of archived footage, the documentary answers the question–”Who discovered Alexander McQueen,” the designer who is still celebrated around the globe for his wearable art. Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist
Flagbearer of the punk moment, Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist revolves around the life of designer Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood. The woman who changed the way British fashion was consumed in the early 1980s was known for braiding the punk music movement with fashion. You can watch it on Apple TV.
Inside Dior
While many narratives talk about one of the world’s most celebrated French fashion houses–Dior, Inside Dior opens doors to the world of Dior as narrated by actress Olivia Colman. It takes the viewers through the design process and business of Dior as seen through the eyes of the brand’s first female creative director appointed in its 70-years long history– Maria Grazia Chiuri.
