Ageism is a problem, that we as a society are dealing with. However, many people around the world, face discrimination based on their age, with being denoted as “you’re too old for this,” “why are you wearing this, look at your age,” etc. many popular celebs too have spoken about their personal experiences in this realm. And the latest figure to talk about the same is fashion designer Vera Wang. Hailing from an industry that at times is known to curate such stereotypical brackets, that try to squeeze people within them, Vera shared that she never thought to “preserve youth in a fanatical, obsessive way”. Known for dressing up the likes of Ariana Grande, Michelle Obama, Uma Thurman, Zendaya and Kim Kardashian, Vera Wang called out people’s ageist remarks on her, after an image on her Instagram “shocked” her followers. Dressed in an orange sports bra, a pair of white shorts and a black jacket, the internet described it as an ‘age-defying image.’ Opening up about the issue, Vera addressed the same in an interview with BBC 100 Women and said “I didn’t think of myself as being particularly risqué…….It’s very complimentary and I am very grateful for that. But, I have been asked; what are my secrets.”

The 72-year-old fashion icon, further talked about her journey in the world of fashion, ever since the age of 19, and how she never thought about youth, “probably because I work with the most beautiful women in the world on daily basis and I envision them as my muses and maybe its a way of dealing with ageing that is productive.”

Calling ageism extremely ‘old-fashioned,’ Vera Wang also mentioned the importance of sleep and a glass of vodka cocktail in her routine, and probably the secret behind her ‘youthful being’ as many would call it.

While not alone ageism but the world of fashion has many a times not allowed women to shatter the boxes they are put into. Then be it body image, skin, pre-defined definition of beauty and a lot more. I mean, just today, Euphoria star Chloe Cherry talked about her struggles with an eating disorder after a porn agent told her that she was ‘fat.’

We still hear such negative connotations attached to how a woman is supposed to look or feel to be able to make a name for themselves in the industry. However, the idea to embrace the imperfections (ideally a term which shouldn’t be breathing atleast in 2022), has become a part of the dictionary, but we still have a long long way to go.
