Lara Dutta Gets Candid About Ageism And Crude Comments Against Credible Actors Like Her, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee

I have said this before and I will say it again. Bollywood is especially ageist when it comes to women. The kind of mercy and opportunities male actors in their 40s or even 50s and 60s are shown, women from their late 30s are simply not. We have legit men in their 50s romancing actresses in their 20s which is creepy, in my opinion. And clearly, my opinions aren’t invalid as Lara Dutta opens up about how women of her age are treated in Bollywood.

Lara Dutta has a lot on her plate currently as she gets ready to appear in her third OTT appearance with Kaun Banegi Shikharwati on Zee5. She also debuted in Disney+ Hotstar’s Hundred and was recently seen in Hiccups and Hookups. She recently spoke about being an actress in her 40s. She spoke about how freeing her age has been for her as an actor. The 43-year-old actress says that her age has liberated her from the shackles of doing glamorous roles just because she is the former Miss Universe. Dutta says that now she is noticed and acknowledged for her talent and capabilities.

Lara Dutta then goes on to acknowledge that the industry does not look kindly upon women her age. According to sources, she said, “You have credible actors like Kajol, Madhuri (Dixit), Rani (Mukherjee), and in that matter, even me, yet when they come on screen, people pass comments like ‘ab buddhi lagne lagi hai’ or ‘yaar ab moti ho gai hai,’ and at the end of the day, you can’t help it. Like everyone else, even we are ageing. I feel even the audience does not allow the liberty for actors to age gracefully, but I genuinely believe that actors who have come before us are rewriting roles for us. Look at Neena Gupta, Ratna Pathak Shah, they just inspire us. They are doing incredible work.”

The hypocrisy in being okay with actors as old as Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar romancing women in their 20s and 30s but actresses as capable as Lara Dutta having difficulties finding opportunities and audience praise due to their age is priceless. It is high time we look at these actresses for more than their appearance and focus on their skills.
