5 Celeb-Approved Ways To Do Ethnic This Festive Season

If you live in India, you’d know that festivities never ever sleep. Whether it’s a wedding, a puja, or simply a casual event, going desi is the usual way to go. But, why take the boring ghissa pitta route — celebrities surely aren’t!

The best way to do Indian is to mix and match, and basically, go fusion! In simpler terms, what we’re suggesting is to take your ethnic wear up a notch and style it differently — rather than in a very over-done traditional manner.

The chaniya-choli and salwar-kameez do retain their classic place in fashion no doubt, but fusion is the way to go for almost every millennial, isn’t it?

So giving you a break from the usual and utterly boring pairings, here’s how you can amp up your Indian ensembles and give them a trendy modern spin!

1.Wrap it up

Instead of tying your saree the normal way, simply create a wrap skirt style with a printed petticoat. Pleat as you would normally and let the pallu fall all the way.

Tie the look in with a belt — don’t use a kamarbandh, but opt for a leather, boho belt instead. Throw on a cropped top instead of a blouse and you’re ready to go!

2. Crop it like it’s hot!

Taking cues from Taapsee, simply take your patiala pants and lock in the look with a cropped top instead of a kurti. Throw on a lovely cape jacket to tie in the entire ensemble.

If you want to add a little bit of extra glam, wear an embroidered belt across the rim of the patiala trousers. Accessorise and voila!

3. Maxi dress up

Dress up your maxi gown with a flowy fabric — you could either use a long dupatta or a shorter saree. Making sure the colour of the fabric and the dress compliment each other, create an empire waist with the material and begin pleating.

Go for light pleats rather than heavy ones and tuck in — secure with a safety pin. Drape the pallu over the arm to create a natural sleeve.

4. Belt-Up your churidhar

If you’re wearing a good ol’ churidaar and need to spruce it up, what better way than with a belt? All you have to do is drape your dupatta on one side of the outfit and cinch it at the waist with a belt. Adjust accordingly to create a nice fall.

Throw on a pair of juttis and jhumkas and you’re ready for the fusion frolic.

5. Saree modified

Wear a western skirt as a petticoat under your saree! Taking a lighter fabric saree, lightly drape and pleat it, making sure the pleats aren’t that obvious and the skirt isn’t entirely hidden. Place the pallu over the shoulders, leaving a long trail of fabric to fall over it.

Throw on a shirt instead of a choli or blouse — this way you add that extra fusion factor!
