Most of the time, the dance numbers from the Bhojpuri industry or the mainstream Hindi cinema refuse to leave people’s social media timelines. This usually has less to do with its beats and more with the vulgar lyrics. Time and again, people have raised concerns about them, but it seems that the problem refuses to go away. However, there are some singers who are choosing to tackle this problem by refusing to contribute their work. The same was done by folk singer and Padma Shree recipient Malini Awasthi, who has refused to sing such songs in the past. Read on to know her experience about the same!
Malini Awasthi On Refusing To Sing Vulgar Songs
During her conversation on The Male Feminist, Malini Awasthi was asked about battling vulgarity in Bhojpuri songs. She stated that we usually highlight the negative things. The singer mentioned that Bhojpuri has so many beautiful songs, and they are also sung very beautifully, but there is no denying the existence of vulgar songs. She candidly shared, “It’s everyone’s fault, including the music company, singer, lyricist and the listeners as well.” She added that people liking that should not be normalised. Recalling an instance, Malini Awasthi shared that she was called to sing a song; however, after seeing its lyrics, she decided not to go forward with it. While highlighting songs like ‘Fevicol se’ she stated that hit “item songs” have very vulgar lyrics. The singer called out society’s hypocrisy by saying, “You won’t find it vulgar because famous people have performed it, but if you see someone else dancing to it at an orchestra, you will call the song vulgar.”
