Congratulations are in order because legendary actress Waheeda Rehman is all set to be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023. On Tuesday, September 26, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur officially announced that the veteran actress will be bestowed with the prestigious award for her contribution to Indian cinema. Anurag Thakur took to X to reveal that in a time when the Women’s Reservation Bill has been passed by the Parliament, it’s only fitting that Waheeda Rehman be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her work.

In a long post on X (formerly Twitter), I&B Minister Anurag Thakur expressed happiness that the actress is being bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for her 5 decades-long career during which she portrayed some critically acclaimed characters. Speaking about the same, the I&B Minister said that with her dedication towards her work, Waheeda Rehman has showcased the strength of a “Bharatiya Nari” who can achieve professional excellence. Further, Anurag Thakur highlighted that the actress has won a National Film Award for her work in Reshma Aur Shera and has also bagged a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

For the uninitiated, Waheeda Rehman made her film debut as a dancer in the Tamil Film Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum. The veteran actress has worked in over 90 films throughout her career. She was honoured with Padma Shri by the Indian Government in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011.
