What To Watch This Valentine’s Day, Based On Your Relationship Status

It’s the day of love and for many, and it is not going to be easy. No, I don’t just mean for singles. I’m sure there are couples out there too who’re either wondering if it is the right time to take the next step or break up. And perhaps, there are also those for whom this is just another day because they’re happily single or in a committed, healthy relationship. Now irrespective of which category you belong to, I wanna pitch you a watch list that will fulfil your every need. Maybe it will make you have an epiphany about your relationship, or make you glad that you’re single because love is hard. Either way, here’s what you should be watching on Valentine’s Day, depending on your relationship status.

If you’re happily single: And Just Like That, The Tinder Swindler

Look at you, just like Samantha Jones from Sex And The City, you’re happy that you’re not attached. You know how to take care of your physical needs, and for your emotional needs, you’ll always have your Galentines. So maybe, watching the SATC reboot, And Just Like That, makes you actually feel good that just like Samantha, you dodged a bullet!

Another suggestion? The Tinder Swindler! You’re so content being single that you’re away from dating apps and that means, you’re probably never getting swindled by some douche pretending to be the estranged son of the king of Nigeria or something!

Last option: Basically any saas-bahu show on Indian TV. Because really, being single is any day better than going through those agniparikshas for love!

If you’re single and sad about it: Modern Love

Modern Love is just such a cathartic experience, because not only are you reminded of the different kinds of love that can exist other than romantic love, but it also shows you that no matter how you are, who you are, or even where you are, love will find a way to you. Plus, it’s easily the most perfect thing to watch on Valentine’s Day with chocolates, wine and cheese!

If you’re in a relationship: Little Things

Dhruv and Kavya are super adorbs, but I watched Little Things when I was super single. And it was difficult because the desperate longing to be held like that, taken care of, loved, and even fought with, was unbearable. But if you’re happily single, then Little Things is like the perfect relatable show to watch with your significant other because every time Dhruv and Kavya do something you’ve done, you both can just be like…

What’s more, if you too are planning on making major decisions in your relationship, such as whether to do long-distance or not, or whether to get married or set your career up first, then you might justget some epiphanies while watching?

When It’s complicated: Someone Great

Someone Great is great because it is a group of girlfriends navigating their complicated love lives and realising that no matter what happens there, they’re the ones they really need. It’s like a better film version of SATC, with necessary upgrades in humour and sex appeal, and starring a talented cast of Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise, Lakeith Stanfield, and Peter Vack.

If they ghosted you: He’s Just Not That Into You

I feel like this one, even though it belongs to that typical rom-com genre, is quite empowering because the way Ginnifer Goodwin doesn’t give up on love despite all the cynicism that Justin Long throws at her makes me so damn hopeful. Furthermore, the fact that this film gives women and men a very healthy myth-buster about what genuine romantic interest might look like as opposed to someone just stringing you along, using you as a sidepiece, or not being interested in you at all.

I mean the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston story is just <3 You don’t need labels for it to be true love, right? Sigh! So much hope, and it is exactly what you need!

Option: You could also watch The Holiday, for some much-needed reminder that, like Iris, you are not a side character in your own life, you’re the leading lady. So find that gumption, and dump that emotional leech’s ass!

If you’re married: This Is Us

You should watch This Is Us irrespective of what your relationship status is because it is just that incredible and heart-touching. But if you want to know the secret sauce to a good, healthy marriage, the show offers some amazing role models in Beth and Randall Pearson and Rebecca and Jack Pearson, and even Rebecca and Miguel. Even though storylines of relationships that might not have worked out, This Is Us manages to give you a sort of guide into what best you can do to just be there for your partner, listen to them, understand them. It also subverts so many gender tropes that we commonly see in marriages on and off-screen, it is seriously refreshing.

What’s more, if you’re planning to have kids, there’s a lot on how to be, not a perfect parent because no such thing, but a parent who does their best. Okay, I’mma cry now!

If you’re broken up: Marriage Story

Breakups suck and they hurt, but the way you end things doesn’t need to be sucky and hurt the other person. Marriage Story is a lovely reminder that even when a relationship is over, it doesn’t really mean the love you felt for each other is completely gone. The respect stays, the love turns into good memories, and both of you can still find a way to be in each other’s lives in a civil manner, especially if you share a child or a pet who needs you to.

If you can’t find enough queer representation in mainstream titles:

My personal favourites are Love, Simon and The Half Of It, which are such beautiful stories of young love. Then there’s also Schitt’s Creek, which gave me my first queer ship in Patrick and David. But if you wanna go more current, might I suggest going for Badhaai Do in a theatre near you? Bollywood’s really trying to grow its understanding of love is love and I think it deserves all the encouragement and help it can get.
