Exclusive: Sonam Bajwa Questions Beauty Standards: “What Does Height Have To Do With Being An Air Hostess?”

Beauty standards a part of nearly every industry, be it entertainment or hospitality. Punjabi star Sonam Bajwa has been a part of both entertainment industry as well as the hospitality industry. Before pursuing her dream of becoming an actress, Sonam was an air hostess. In the latest episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, Sonam Bajwa opened up about beauty standards in hospitality industry and questioned their existence.

Sonam Bajwa said, “We have created this standard but it’s breaking now. Air hostess, aapki itni height honi chaiye, aapki body itni hi honi chaiye. Arey fitness alag baat hai, for medical reasons, it’s different. But there shouldn’t be parameters like that. Arey khoobsurat ladki hi serve kar sakti hai kya? I think this shouldn’t happen. If you think a woman is fair or thin and she’s beautiful toh vo air hostess banni chaiye. And what does height have to do with how you’re going to serve in the aircraft? What does height have to do with the fact that emergency aa jaye toh aap evacuate karwa lenge? Kuch lena dena hi nahi hai.”

Speaking further on The Made Feminist, Sonam Bajwa spoke about the way beauty standards worked when she was an air hostesses. “Years ago, when I became an air hostess, it was a thing. There were huge beauty standards for a girl to become an air hostess. Mujhe ye baat aaj tak acting mein bhi samajh nahi aayi. What does certain parameters have to do with acting jismein acting ka koi lena dena nahi hai. Aap kaise dikhte hain, aap kitne patle hain, aap kitne gore hain, skin kitni achi hai. Aapki height kya hai, weight kya hai, skin colour hona chaiye. Like if someone has acne and they’re endorsing a brand, it’s good na. It looks real. There shouldn’t be these kind of limitations in any profession for that matter,” said Sonam Bajwa
