Son Of Gangubai Criticises Alia Bhatt’s Film. Says ‘My Mother Has Been Turned Into A Prostitute’

As soon as the trailer of GangubaiKathiawadi featuring Alia Bhatt dropped, people started praising Alia’s powerful avatar as she completely immersed herself into the character of Gangubai who is shown as a madam of a brothel in Kamathipura, the famous red light area in Mumbai. But the film also received a lot of criticism and this time Gangubai’s family lashed out at the makers of the film for portraying her as a prostitute instead of a social worker.

Gangubai’s family – her purported adopted son Babu Raoji Shah and her granddaughter Bharti have expressed their displeasure against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film for representing a social activist as a sex worker. Babu Raoji Shah said, “My mother has been turned into a prostitute. People are now saying inexplicable things about my mother.” According to the lawyer of the family, since the release of the trailer, the whole family of Gangubai is in shock because the way her character is portrayed is completely wrong, baseless, and vulgar. He said that after seeing a picture of Gangubai in the promo of the film, the family is hiding and shifting homes. The film is causing problems for the entire family because people are asking whether Gangubai was a prostitute or a social worker.

Her granddaughter Bharti said that the makers of the film have defamed their family for money and didn’t even ask for permission before making the film or writing the book. “The makers have defamed my family out of greed for money. It cannot be accepted. You did not ask for the family’s consent before going ahead with the project. You did not come to us while writing the book, nor did you seek our permission before making the film,” she said. She further added that her grandmother used to live in Kamathipura but that does not mean every woman of Kamathipura was a prostitute. She mentioned that they used to proudly narrate the stories of their grandmother because she worked for the upliftment of the sex workers. But now people are calling them to tell how she is being portrayed as a prostitute.

Talking about the case, Babu Raoji Shah had filed a petition against Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2021 but the case is still pending. According to the reports, they have sent notices to Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Hussain Zaidi who is the writer of the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai: Stories of Women from the Ganglands,’ from where the story of Gangubai Kathiawadi was adapted. The two haven’t responded yet.
