‘Say Yes To The Dress India’ On Discovery+ Marries The Fun And Drama Of Wedding BTS In Search Of The Perfect Dress

Remember the show Say Yes To The Dress that would premier on TLC with Randy Fenoli taking the brides on a journey of choosing their dream wedding dress? And in case you’re the one (just like me) who’d always look forward to the dulhan drama, then, dear readers, I have a piece of exciting news for you. Discovery + has taken the charge of reprising the show and bringing the concept with an Indian tadka, with Say Yes To The Dress India!

Hosted by celebrity stylist Divyak D’souza, known for styling celebrities like Farhan Akhtar, Raveena Tandon and Chitrangada Singh, the eight-part series will take you on a shopping spree with the bride-to-be and her family as they look for her dream dress.

With a list of popular designer names attached to the Indian version of the popular show including, Varun Bahl, Natasha Dalal, Rahul Mishra, Neeta Lulla, Zara Umrigar and more, the show hints at the shaadi prep madness, the importance of a bride’s dress, and more, all wrapped in a bag full of emotions.

The first episode which has already made its way to the audiences’ screens, talks about two brides namely Shivani Rawat and Mallika Agarwal. The show opens with an introduction of the two to-be brides who briefly share about their wedding plans and how Covid hurdled the prep. Furthermore, host and stylist Divyak D’souza is seen fixing up a quick meeting with the bride and her fam as they discuss the outfit of her dreams and the function she’s supposed to wear it in. Followed by which Divyak and his team curate mood boards and chalk out potential designer labels that would fit well to the bride’s needs, basically the whole BTS of shaadi shopping is what the episode entails (which is quite fun to watch TBH).

Taking the viewers inside the fitting room, the bride and her close ones who take the verdict seat as they are seen marking each outfit, the dulhan parades wearing is interesting to watch. Many points like, colour, comfort, silhouette, embroidery and personal style come in play as she finalises the outfit, all of which seem well-served by the stylist too.

And through this process of finding the right piece, the show also unveils the stereotypes and Indian mindsets that enter the room while judging the dress, on the big screen (something I didn’t know still existed). And don’t be surprised if you hear dialogues like, “kaafi deep cut blouse hai,” “slit zyaada hai,” or “family kya sochegi,” all of which are indicators of the many problems still attached to a woman’s cleavage.

Scanning through each member sitting as panellists, who at times hold a bigger stack of choice instead of the bride herself (quite like a reality show audition I must say). The much filtered, ‘mummy-approved,’ dress finally hears a ‘yes’ from the bride and everyone bursts into moments of joy being happy about their find.

Bringing the dress-up/doll up drill to life, what is also interesting about the 30 minutes long episode is the celebration of Indian designers, as it brings the beautifully beaded showcase of great designs under the roof of a popular title like ‘Say Yes To The Dress.’

Though some of the final outfits as chosen by the bride are not what I absolutely love, but I am definitely here for the wedding prep BTS and their adventurous journey of finding their ‘sapno ka outfit’, because as the trailer says  ‘yeh bas ek shadi ka joda nahi but emotion se judi yaadien hai’ (emo). I am thrilled to watch the coming episodes too (and I am sure I am gonna be hooked on each one of them).  You too can check out the show streaming exclusively on Discovery+ from December 8, 2021.
