Santoor Maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Passes Away At 84, Tributes Pour In From PM Modi And Others

I am not a very ardent classical music fan but I have heard my parents heap praises on some of the most talented and veteran Indian classical musicians. And Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s name was among the top on that list. But it is a sad day for classical music lovers across the country today. Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away at the age of 84.

He suffered a heart attack at 9 AM and as per reports, his family has said that he was active and was supposed to perform in Bhopal next week. Even though Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was on regular dialysis, he had an active lifestyle.

Tributes For Pandit Shivkumar Sharma

Tributes have been pouring in for the late music composer from politicians and other musicians and actors as well. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that ‘our cultural world has become poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji’. Singer Adnan Sami also went on to tweet that he is devasted upon hearing the sad news about his ‘guru’. Grammy award-winning musician Ricky Kej also tweeted that Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s demise has left ‘a huge void in the global music landscape’. Check out their tweets below.

More About The Late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma

This great musician was born in 1938 in Jammu and is said to be the first Indian musician to have played classical music on the santoor. He was also bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan award. He has contributed greatly to Indian films and is known for his music in Chandni, Lamhe and Faasle. Pandit Shivkumar Shanker also composed music with Hariprasad Chaurasia for various Hindi films like Silsila.
