We Ranked 6 Of Our Favourite Radhika Apte Characters. Happy Birthday Netflix’s Sweetheart!

I’m going to start this one with a cliché so bear with me. If I ask you who is the first actor that comes to your mind when I talk about Indian web series/movies and you say anyone else other than Radhika Apte, then I’m going to conclude you haven’t watched enough Netflix. I mean, it really is hard to miss Netflix’s sweetheart when she has time after time, project after project, given such brilliant performances. Whether it is playing a cop or just a girl next door, Radhika Apte has done it all and with so much conviction that you can’t help but think of her characters as real people.

And today, September 7, on the Indie actor’s birthday I’m back with not just a list of her characters (because that would be kinda boring and lame) but I’m also going to rank them. Now now, I know I’m not some hoity toity film critic who can rank the characters of Radhika Apte, but I am an audience with an opinion.

So, today, on her birthday, here are some of the brilliant characters that Radhika Apte has played on screen that I have loved (dearly) and continue to do so:

Ranked list:

6. Nida Rahim from Ghoul

With her performance in the bone-chilling horror/thriller show, Ghoul, Radhika Apte proved that there is no genre in this world that she can’t stand out in. In the show, she plays the character of Nida Rahim who is a newly recruited military officer. Her character is bold, fierce, and unwavering even after she realises the state’s hypocrisy, finds out about the orders of violence, and the supernatural element behind it all.

5. Sofie from Andhadhun

Andhadhun is one of my most favourite movies of all time. But I have one complaint – there is not enough screen time given to Radhika Apte. In the movie, she plays the role of Sofie who is your typical girl-next-door. She is young, full of life, open-minded, and has a great fashion sense. Sofie literally did not want to fight with Ayushmaan Khurrana’s character because “it gives her pimples” – talk about relatability.

4. Anjali Mathur from Sacred Games

Sacred Games as a show is one of its kind. The intensity, the language, the rawness, and the mystery of it all adds a charm like no other. In the web series, Radhika Apte plays the role of Anjali Mathur who is a brilliant and skilled RAW agent. She is risktaker, hard-ass, won’t quit, and highly intelligent agent that gets killed by the end of season 1 because of her own curiosity and will to get to the bottom of the Gaitonde case.

3. Kalindi from Lust Stories

Radikha Apte is one of the most real people in the film industry and that even reflects in her work. And I believe that is exactly why her portrayal of Kalindi in Lust Stories was so relatable to so many women – including me (well, except for the delusional part). Kalindi is a delusional, anxiety-driven, insecure woman who struggles with freedom – whether it is having it, controlling it, or learning to live with it. She is as complex a character as an real person in the real world – something you don’t often find in Hindi characters.

2. Kumudhavalli from Kabali

There is a stereotype attached to South Indian films – that their female characters often end up playing supporting roles – and well, there is no smoke without fire, is there? However, Kabali is most definitely an exception. Here it is Radhika Apte aka Kumudhavalli who is not only assertive but also politically motivated. Unlike most of the other South Indian female protagonists, she is not mute and shy but rather is as rowdy as men.

1. Ahalya from Ahalya

Ahalya is one of the most intelligent, well-scripted, dreamy erotic short films I have come across. This short film directed by Sujoy Ghosh is inspired by the story of Ahalya from the Ramayana – the story that fired up thousands of conversations around the world. Radhika Apte in this short film plays the seductress who left everyone in the audience mesmerized and enchanted with her beauty. But if you think she is just all looks, then think again. Her character is sharp-minded and can most definitely stimulate you in the right way (pun intended).

Radhika Apte has played a wide range of characters and I know that this list doesn’t even cover half of those, but these characters are the ones that left an imprint in my mind.

And if this list is any proof, she is hands down one of the most brilliantly talented and versatile actors of our generation. In fact, I’d even say she has a leage of her own.

Check out the time when Radhika Apte met Hauterrfly:

Happy Birthday Radhika Apte and thank you for giving us such amazing characters.
