Priyanka Chopra Had Mixed Feelings About Wearing Her Mangalsutra After Tying The Knot With Nick Jonas. We Totally Get It!

Have you ever noticed that when a woman and a man get married, most of the symbols that shout ‘taken’ are worn by the woman? And the main of all the symbols is the mangalsutra – the ultimate thread that ties both the individuals together. When my sister got married and she wore the mangalsutra for the first time for a family function, I saw her constantly fidgeting with it and when I asked her about it, she said that it is a really surreal moment for her and felt an unexplainable feeling wearing it. I looked at her with confusion and she said that I had to experience it myself to know what she was talking about. And then I came across this video of Priyanka Chopra Jonas talking about that same unexplainable feeling that she got when she wore her mangalsutra for the first time and how it was a special moment for her.

Yep, in a recent video that Priyanka Chopra shared on her Instagram, she was seen talking to jewellery creative director of Bvlgari, Lucia Silvestri, about how she felt when she wore her mangalsutra for the first time after marrying Nick Jonas in 2018.

Talking about her experience, Priyanka Chopra Jonas said, “I remember when I wore mine for the first time… because we have grown with the idea of what it means. It was just a very special moment for me. At the same time, as a modern woman, I also understand the repercussions of what it means. Do I like the idea of wearing mangalsutra or is it too patriarchal? But at the same time, I am that generation that’s sort of in the middle. Maintain tradition but know who you are and what you stand for. And we’ll see what the next generation of girls might do differently.”

Priyanka Chopra who married Nick Jonas at Umaid Bhavan Palace, Rajasthan in 2018 in two different ceremonies is often seen flaunting her mangalsutra on various occasions. Being a feminist and vocal about her thoughts on it, it wasn’t much of a surprise when she questioned if wearing the symbol of marriage was too patriarchal. I mean, after all, we’ve all wondered that at some point.

And I guess that is the thing I like about her the most. The fact that she isn’t afraid to question her own choices and calls herself out when she needs to. And as for whether a mangalsutra is patriarchal or not, is, I believe, a choice that a woman should make. If she wants to wear it, she can. I believe wearing a mangalsutra (or not wearing one for that matter) doesn’t make someone less/more of a feminist.
