From ‘Heartstopper’ To ‘Dickinson’ These 10 Shows Portray Honest Queer Complexities And Accurate Realities

Shows and movies have become the latest educational books for the youth to dive in and learn from.  And honestly, it is the best school one could ever sign up for. While every story brings with it a nuanced experience of never-heard-before tales, or at times interesting perspectives to already stated facts, some stories feel like a warm hug, as they whisper, “we are here for you.” Thinking about the many takeaways I have ever had from every film that I have watched, the idea of relationships and love has always catered to my fantasies and close realities. From Bollywood’s dreamy eye for love that is described through beautiful melodies and heroines in chiffon sarees, to Hollywood’s idea of simplistic romance, there has been a drastic change in the many kinds of fairytales that we see in the current times. Love tales as we watch them today, shatter the boundaries that restrict them. And as we talk about all things love, we can’t forget Pride month. Celebrating this special month of the year, we have for you our favourite list of shows that you can learn from and love with all your heart, this Pride month.

This time again, it introduces you to five gay professionals, known as the Fab 5, giving guests a fail-proof wardrobe, grooming, dietary, cultural, and lifestyle makeover.

Euphoria

While we hardly can find time to shift from the dramatic fights of Maddy, and Cassie and the problematic lifestyles of every teenager in this popular HBO series, one thing that shines bright in Euphoria are its layered relationships. Exploring sexuality and decoding some special bonds, characters like Jules, Rue and Nate seamlessly deliver a mix of self-exploration, and complexities of queerness, that come unlabelled.

Romil & Jugal

Director/producer Ekta Kapoor is credited for all the saas bahu drama on Indian television, but her prowess in presenting stories about queer characters often remains unknown. The story ventures into the lives of Delhi-based wedding planners, Tara and Karan, who balance the complexities on both the personal and professional front. It is through Karan, that the show talks about the realities of a gay man that travel way beyond the stereotypical portrayals by Indian directors on celluloid.

Sex Education

One show that wins full marks for representation and diversity, Sex Education plays it well with its character graphs. The show ventures beyond the cliched portrayals of queer characters and talks about everything from asexuality to pansexuality.
