The recently released film Peddi, starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, has sparked controversy regarding certain objectionable scenes. Many people bashed the film for hypers*xualisation of the lead female actor that led to some uncomfortable scenes. The director acknowledged the backlash and even issued an apology. Scenes Removed From Peddi?

There has been a strong reaction to the objectification of Janhvi Kapoor’s character in Buchi Babu Sana’s Peddi. The director had also issued an official statement acknowledging the backlash. In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Buchi Babu Sana revealed that objectionable and some romantic scenes were cut from the film. According to the director, some scenes in the film were “turned misleading”, and her character Achiyyamma was “misread” by many people. The director had earlier promised to remove these scenes from the film, and he has finally delivered on that.

What Was The Controversy?

Many people and women’s activists had raised serious concerns regarding the extreme s*xualisation of Janhvi Kapoor’s character. Some even opined that harassment was mistaken for romance in Peddi, and the voice grew louder on social media, leading the director to finally take notice. There were reports that Janhvi Kapoor had raised objections to these shots during post-production. However, the suggestions were reportedly dismissed by the director, and he went ahead with it anyway. As of now, Janhvi Kapoor or Ram Charan have not addressed the backlash.

Well, such hypers*xualisation of female characters needs to stop. It’s time we start adding substance to the female characters instead of making them eye candy to serve the male gaze. The female characters need to have relevance to the story and not just add a baseless romantic angle in the narrative. This backlash was quite necessary and a reminder that the audience will no longer tolerate such objectification of women in films.
