Governments already make many rules for people. But what if they also start to control your s*x life? That is exactly what happens in the movie called One Night Only, directed by Will Gluck and starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner in main roles. A strict new government rule quickly leads to chaos and many hilarious moments. The setup feels fresh yet messy as people race against the clock in a city that suddenly turns wild. Read on to know all about it.

Plot

In the 2026 romantic comedy One Night Only, premarital s*x becomes illegal across the United States except for one government-approved twelve-hour window each year. New York City fills with singles chasing connections during that limited night. Freshly dumped pizza maker Owen and hopeful romantic singer Allie meet by chance amid the frenzy. Instead of treating the evening like a wild ride, they feel an instant spark. A string of mistakes, wrong identities, and police raids keeps pulling them apart and shoving them back together. They face emotional bumps and physical obstacles while the clock ticks. So, do they get their happy ending? No spoilers!

Performances

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner do solid work in their roles. Each one brings warmth and a quick-witted side to the characters. There is an easy, natural charm between them that keeps us engaged. Further, the supporting cast and cameos bring an extra dose of fun and energy.

Verdict

The first half of One Night Only had me in stitches. It was pure chaos in the best way. Like, the jokes were landing hard, the leads showcased real chemistry, and I actually squeaked with laughter more than once. I was so into it that the intermission pissed me off. Why were they stopping the fun? Then the second half just deflated. After all that buildup it turned lazy and strangely mellow, like the movie lost its nerve.

The central premise is genuinely unique and interesting, but they barely scratch the surface. Like, the unique mandate could have been explored further, as it had the potential to be an absolutely wild ride. However, it instead settles for comfortable. Still, even with the unevenness, the film is silly in a good way. It’s charming when you least expect it. Overall, it’s not perfect, but I walked out smiling.
