Insidious: Out Of The Further Review: A Forgettable Addition To The Horror Franchise!
The latest installment in the Insidious franchise is directed by Jacob Chase. Read our review here.
A good horror film continues to haunt you long after the credits roll. I remember watching IT and being scared of the sinks for many days. Such an impact is rare in horror films these days. Anyway, I went in with high hopes to watch the latest run in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: Out Of The Further, and returned disappointed. The film drew me in with its interesting build-up in the first half but went downhill post-interval. Here’s a quick review if you are planning to watch this much-awaited film. Read on.
Plot
Firstly, what is The Further? If you haven’t watched any of the films in this franchise, you may have this question. It’s basically a dark void between our world and the next world. It’s a place where the dead live. In Insidious: Out Of The Further, the dark entities try to come to the real world using Gemma, a dentist (Amelia Eve), as a carrier. The film revolves around Gemma’s journey to stop the dead from entering the human world in a physical form. Gemma’s daughter Maya is played by Island Austin. Sam Spruell is seen as Cyrus, the supreme power of the dead, and Lin Shaye returns as Elise.
What’s Good
It was nice to be back in a familiar world since Insidious has been one of the good horror franchises. The expectations were high, especially because the film promised us a new concept by merging the two worlds. The first half slowly builds a chilling atmosphere with Gemma’s haunting experiences with the dark entities. There aren’t many jump scares; however, the story makes us feel the discomfort that the protagonist suffers. Some will especially creep you out if you fear dentists. The entry of Elise in this film was also a bit I particularly enjoyed, and would not want it any other way. Also, this film breaks away from the obvious kinds of jump scares, and delivers such moments when least expected. Unfortunately, the fun does not last long.
The performances are decent. Amelia Eve has done justice to the character, but only so much could she do with the writing. Island Austin is magic on the screen. She nails the role perfectly with every emotion on point.

I expected the stakes to get higher in the second half. Sad to report that Jacob Chase’s Insidious: Out Of The Further does not deliver. The film’s screenplay turns flat and formulaic. The biggest disappointment comes from how convenient the story becomes, minimising the conflicts like it’s no big deal. The concept of the further is not explored to the best of its potential, and in anything, the second half only pulls you out of the film.
The protagonist is a victim of weak and unimaginative writing, and I was not really rooting for her, probably because there was an instant disconnect. Insidious: Out Of The Further doesn’t have any interesting and defined supporting characters as well. Quite bored with the same boyfriend trope who doesn’t believe his girlfriend unless something worse happens.
Talking about supporting characters, the antagonist Cyrus is literally the most boring ghost I’ve seen in a while. The character lacked any personality or impact.

Verdict
Not the strongest addition to the Insidious franchise. Safe to say, the first two films have the most entertaining so far. While Insidious: Out Of The Further had the potential to be a good watch, it’s a wasted opportunity, and blame the writing for that.
