There’s something chaotic about watching Olivia Rodrigo wear a babydoll dress for her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, and ignite the internet. While at one look, it seemed harmless, but the soft, flouncy, and almost childlike traits had the internet thinking that it’s promoting ‘pedophilia.’ But contrary to popular belief, the infamous ‘babydoll dress’ is actually layered with history, contradiction, and a specific kind of feminine rebellion.
Explained: Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Babydoll’ Controversy
Olivia Rodrigo’s recent look was a Chloé babydoll mini styled with bloomers and knee-high socks. This look triggered a major discourse about whether it was too ‘Lolita-coded.’ And yet, this vigorous reaction says less about the dress and more about how we’ve been trained to read women’s bodies. Because the babydoll dress started as lingerie in the 1940s and evolved into mainstream fashion in the ’60s, and then was weaponised by ’90s grunge icons.
This includes Courtney Love, Kim Gordon, Kat Bjelland, and the women who turned this hyper-feminine fashion into confrontational. They used to pair this with smudged eyeliner, torn tights, and heavy boots. The message was, “You don’t get to decide what this means.” For the unversed, the dress pushed against the hyper-feminised aesthetics of the ’50s, where tea-length hemlines and cinched waists were popular. That’s exactly what Rodrigo was going for. Her version of this dress should not be mistaken for nostalgia about girlhood, but about bending and reclaiming it.
“Olivia Rodrigo’s acting like a toddler” “she’s making herself seem younger wearing that babydoll dress” No. She’s. Not. And she’s not “lifting up the dress” on purpose. those are bloomers/shorts. This outfit is a famous vintage style that was popular during the 60’s pic.twitter.com/U5JV4jeH2t

The Backlash
The outrage against Olivia’s look is not new; each time a young woman wears something ‘pink’ or something that references ‘girlhood,’ the conversation spirals into discomfort and hypers*xualisation of literally everything. Because when people look at this dress and immediately read it as something provocative, they’re ignoring how they are NOT pointing out the men who are s*xualising all this. It’s not coming from the women wearing the clothes; it’s the system and the male gaze that should be called out.
Whether knowingly or not, Rorigo stepped into the lineage of women who have used fashion to change the narratives. The discourse about her pulling her top and showing her “diaper shorts” is not true. Those are bloomer shorts, which are being worn by everyone this summer. These are usually worn under a sheer dress. It’s that we still haven’t learned how to look at something without projecting something onto it.
