‘TVD’s’ Hindi Remake Incoming, A Reminder That Nina Dobrev’s Performance Is Incomparable

The unthinkable and the unspeakable has happened! A desi doppelganger of The Vampire Dairies is here, called Ishq Mein Ghayal, replete with a verbatim translation of the pilot episode of Julie Plec’s cult favourite vampire love story. But trust me when I say that these two are as different as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce, even when they dress alike. Starring Reem Shaikh (similar to Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev), Karan Kundrra (similar to Damon Salvatore, originally played by Ian Somerhalder), and Gashmeer Mahajani (similar to Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley), the show is soon going to be airing on Colors TV.

The promo of Ishq Mein Ghayal is also out and much to the shock of TVD fans, every dialogue has been copied from the original including Nina Dobrev AKA Elena Gilbert’s opening dialogue “Dear Diary,” and Damon’s iconic “Hello, Brother” as well. Tch tch!

Now, all three of these Indian actors have big shoes to fill. But since today, January 9, is Nina Dobrev’s birthday, here’s a strong reminder of what an incredible performance she put forth in The Vampire Diaries. Yes, including playing all her doppelganger versions and making them look like distinct personalities! Not sure anyone can come close!

Nina Dobrev played Elena Gilbert, the damsel who is always in distress, and losing loved ones. But the hold she had on both the Salvatore brothers, and on her friends, left every girl watching the show seething with jealousy! We too want hot boyfriends and a small town full of friends who’d lay their lives down just to protect us!

Dobrev’s portrayal of Elena was good, even if it might’ve gotten monotonous post-Season 5. She displayed a range in her performance as she goes from being a human dealing with grief and finding epic love with Stefan to being a vampire who could flip her switch and just turn her emotions off and feel alive only when she was with Damon. The dilemma she faced on the show about whether to stick to her human morals or own being a blood-sucking vamp and defend someone like Damon was on clear display. And every time Elena had to compromise on the former, Nina’s performance made it look real and impactful.

Coming to Elena’s doppelganger on the show, the notorious and infamous, Katherine Pierce, who always survives. Nina did a mighty brilliant job at her portrayal as well. Katherine was the stark opposite of Elena. And to be able to portray two characters who look the same and yet make the audience differentiate between them by only using mannerisms (and of course the outfits, hair, and heels!) takes skills, alright? If an actor can make the audience hate a character, then, you know their acting chops are great! And who doesn’t love to hate or hate to love Katerina Petrova?

Nina’s chemistry with both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (she dated IRL as well) was sizzling. It often confused me who I wanted to ship her with in the end, Team Stelena or Team Delena? Even though I shipped her harder with Stefan, I will not deny that she looked better with Damon!

Elena’s character as a whole was well brought put by Nina Dobrev. Even though the decisions she made sometimes were stupid, and I know the writers of the show made her do them, her character and personality were very nuanced.

So, all-in-all, as someone who saw what Nina Dobrev created on The Vampire Diaries, I can say with much confidence that no one else will be able to come close to it!
