Padma Shri

Nargis Dutt was honoured with the fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri in 1958 by the then President Dr Rajendra Prasad. It became all the more special because she was the first Indian actress to receive this award.

Mother India Fame

Mother India will always be considered Nargis Dutt’s best work and fairly so, she displayed the most impeccable performance in the film. Her movie was internationally acclaimed and she also received the best actress award at the 11th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival which happens annually in the Czech Republic.

Fashion Statements 

Nargis Dutt made sarees a statement piece during her time. She mostly wore white sarees and eventually got the title of Lady In White. To make a plain colour look fashionable so much so that it became the talk of the town, only Nargis Dutt could have made it possible.

Range Of Films

Nargis Dutt started her acting career as a child artist and decided to quit after her marriage to Sunil Dutt. In the span of her career as an actor, Nargis Dutt went ahead to pick movies that only became proof of her wide range of acting skills. From doing light-hearted comedy and romance films like Shree 420, and Chori Chori,  Nargis was also seen portraying serious roles in films like Raat Aur Din, Mother India, Adalat and Andaaz among others.

Rajya Sabha

Nargis Dutt started her political affiliations after ending her career in films. Here too, she went on to become the first actress ever to have earned a nomination for a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1980. Unfortunately, due to her illness, she could not continue with her duties and took her last breath on May 3, 1981.
