Meghan Markle Talks About The Effects Of Roe V Wade Overturning On Black Women And Communities

I feel like in all of the news I received recently, the overturning of Roe v Wade is what shook me to my core. While I am not in the US, as a woman, this ruling upsets and disturbs me as it does so many women around the world. Many celebrities have come forth to voice their opposition to this ruling and one of them is Meghan Markle and Gloria Steinem. In a recent interview, both women talked about the overturning while Markle also revealed Prince Harry’s reaction to the same.

Meghan Markle emphasised the importance of normalising conversations about abortion and women’s health. Speaking about how bearing a child is a highly personal journey, Markle stated that she feels very fortunate to be able to have both her children and she understands what it’s like to feel connected to what’s growing inside one’s body. Markle then added that what happens to our bodies is deeply personal and it can lead to silence and stigma, despite the fact that so many of us are dealing with health issues.

Meghan Markle also spoke about the effects this judgement will have on women in the US. She said that from now onwards, this judgement has a serious impact on women’s bodies and lives and women have already started sharing experiences about how their physical safety is being jeopardised. She further added that women with resources would travel to seek an abortion, while those without may attempt to perform one on themselves, putting themselves at great risk. Markle said that some women will be forced to obtain abortion medicines from unlicensed pharmacies and others who are pregnant and in a medical emergency will be at the mercy of doctors and lawyers to determine if an operation required to save their lives can even be performed. She then said all these things tell women that them or their physical health doesn’t matter.

Markle went on to say that this is one of the reasons she called Steinem. Because Steinem helps remind her that when she is angry, she must channel her energy into something that makes a difference. That is what activism entails.

When asked how this ruling will affect the people of colour, who do not have the same medical resources as white people do Meghan Markle said that these are systemic, linked, and preventable problems. She added that women of colour, particularly Black women, are disproportionately affected by these decisions since most of them do not have equal access to health care, economic opportunities, or mental health resources. She said that it is difficult to overstate the impact of this decision on these communities.

During her conversation with Steinem in the Vogue interview, Meghan Markle also disclosed how Prince Harry reacted to the Roe v Wade decision and said that he is a feminist and added that his reaction was like hers, guttural. She said that she knows that there is fear among many women right now. However, Markle said that women must come together and not wallow; we all must do the work.

Several Hollywood celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and others, have come out against the Supreme Court ruling. There have also been celebrities who have spoken out about their abortion experiences in order to highlight the tragic consequences of the Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw reproductive rights.
