Lata Mangeshkar is a name that commands the highest of regard, honour and respect. The songs by the Melody Queen remain the favourites of many even today, and her voice is dearly missed by all her fans. There is not a song sung by the late Lata Mangeshkar that has not gone on to be a huge hit! From the most romantic love tracks to foot-tapping chartbusters, she has given us gems of songs that make her immortal in her fans’ hearts! And recently, the famed American magazine, Rolling Stone, has listed Lataji’s name in their 200 Best Singers of All Time listicle!

Lata Mangeshkar has been given the 84th spot on Rolling Stone’s 200 Best Singers Of All Time list. Other renowned artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Freddie Mercury and many others have also been featured on the list. The magazine also wrote a lengthy description of Lataji and her melodious voice.

They described her voice as ‘crystalline’ and ‘eternally girlish’ and wrote that she is a cornerstone of Indian pop music. Rolling Stone also crowned Lata Mangeshkar as the ’empress’ of playback singers and vocal magicians. They further mentioned that Lataji’s sister, Asha Bhosle, also considered her a favourite. Noting the differences in the vocal qualities of both these accomplished singers, they wrote that Ashaji was more ‘versatile and prolific’, and Lataji was the ‘gold standard for the piercing brilliance in her tone’.

The first 10 spots on the list were given to Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Sam Cook, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Otis Redding and Al Green.

It was an immense loss to the realm of music and the world when Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6, 2022, due to a multi-organ failure. She was 92 years old. Some of her classic hits include ‘Mera Dil Yeh Pukare Aaja’, ‘Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai’, ‘Yeh Galiyan Yeh Chaubara’ and many more.
