Jennifer Hudson Achieves EGOT Status With Her Tony Award Win. Here’s What An EGOT Is And Why It’s A Big Deal
Winning awards is a thing of pride and prestige and it’s not like everyone bags awards on a regular basis. Having said that, some of our celebs have managed to bag some huge wins and that too multiple ones. 2022 has become a special year for singer and actress Jennifer Hudson. Recently, during the Tony Awards 2022, Jennifer Hudson bagged a win for A Strange Loop making it an historical event for the actress. Historical because with this win she has officially received an EGOT status. The actress previously bagged an Emmy, Grammy and an Oscar and only needed a Tony trophy in her kitty to complete her EGOT status.
Jennifer Hudson co-produced A Strange Loop which was nominated for the best musical. Written by Michael R. Jackson, A Strange Loop is about a queer black man named Usher who works as an usher at a Broadway show while he pens his first musical but is battling his inner demons that stand in his way. RuPaul Charles, Marc Platt, Megan Ellison, Don Cheadle, Frank Marshall, Alan Cumming, Ilana Glazer, Mindy Kaling and Billy Porter also co-produced the musical. A Strange Loop is a musical with a book, music and lyrics by Michael R. Jackson. The musical has won several accolades including the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as 2 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

What Is An EGOT Status? Why Is This Win Historical?
EGOT refers to artists who have won all four of the major awards in the American entertainment industry – an Emmy, Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. In the American showbiz industry, EGOT is referred to as “the grand slam” as it is a HUGE achievement. Achieving an EGOT is not only difficult but the win means that one has moved into the stratosphere of superstardom. Having said that, Jennifer Hudson’s EGOT win is even more special as she has now become the 17th person to hold the title of EGOT. And that’s not all, there’s more. She is the 3rd black person, 2nd black woman and the 5th woman to win an EGOT. That makes her win rather historical. Jennifer Hudson’s win is a big deal not only because EGOT is rare but also because it’s a win for women and people of colour. Well, this is a grander grand slam!

For the unversed, Jennifer Hudson has earlier won an Oscar for her role in the 2007 film Dreamgirls. The singer-actress has bagged two Grammy awards. She first won the Grammy for Best R&B Album for her 2009 studio album titled Jennifer Hudson. She won her second Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for The Color Purple. In 2021, she won a Daytime Emmy for Baba Yaga which was co-produced by her. She had also lent her voice to it.
