I grew up in a household where my parents always listened to good music. So, names like RD Burman, Jatin-Lalit, Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and others always cropped up in conversations surrounding music in my house. And after 1981, lyricist Javed Akhtar’s name was also got included in those conversations. Listening to Javed Akhtar’s lyrics over the years, made me realise that he is one of the rare kinds of lyricists who can write songs for people belonging to all ages! Uff, the romantic songs written by him are THE best! 

Gen Z needs to take notes from his songs if they want to impress someone. It is Javedji 77th birthday today, and I thought it is the best time to list down the 10 best romantic songs penned by him that are classics even today!

1. ‘Suno Na Suno Na’ – Chalte Chalte 

Seeing Shah Rukh Khan in this song made me wish for a lover like him! This beautiful is crooned by my super favourite Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik. This song always has a soothing effect on me no matter how many times I listen to it because the lyrics are so calming.

2. ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ – 1942 A Love Story

After this song, the expectations of all the girls shot sky-high! The lyrics in this song are exactly how every woman wants to be described by her lover. Javed Akhtar just compiled every woman’s wish in this song and Kumar Sanu brilliantly sang it!

3. ‘Jashn-E-Bahara’ – Jodha Akbar 

‘Jashn-E-Bahara’ always holds a special place in my heart! It features two of my favourite actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan and the lyrics are so, so pure! This is the kind of song that instantly reminds you of your lover the moment you hear it. 

4. ‘Main Agar Kahoon’ – Om Shanti Om

A modern favourite, ‘Main Agar Kahoon’, always has me dropping everything I am doing to listen to it. Even while I was writing this, I paused, listened to the whole track and resumed writing! Javed Akhtar has woven magic in this one!

5. ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon’ – Yes Boss 

I feel Abhijeet crooning every lyric written by Javed Akhtar makes it a masterpiece! Imagine a guy singing “Zameen ko aasamaan banau, sitaron se sajau, agar tum kaho!” Uff, no chance in hell I am saying no to him! 

6. ‘Kuch To Hua Hai’ – Kal Ho Na Ho 

This song is what to play when you are in love! Everything that you do when you are in love is penned by Javedji as if he personally saw you do these things. Kaafi pyaara gaana!

7. ‘Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha’ – Main Hoon Na 

If you want to passionately convey your feelings to your lover, this song is it! Yet another song by Javed-Abhijeet that I will never mind listening to on a loop! It is one of those rare love songs that makes you want to dance to it!

8. ‘Uff Teri Adaa’ – Kartik Calling Kartik 

A song so verbal where a guy spells out what he liked about his girl? A song where he sings that his life is haseen because of his haseena? Only Javed Akhtar could write that without making it sound vulgur! 

9. ‘Hosanna’ – Ekk Deewana Tha

I was sold at the opening line of this song. “Dil hote jo, mere seene mein do, doosra dil bhi main tumhe deta todneko!” Find me a better line a lover could sing for his girl. I’ll wait.

10. ‘Acchi Lagti Ho’ – Kuch Naa Kaho

It is one of the songs that has romance and sensuality in it. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s chemistry in this song was sizzling!
