5 Horror Anime That Will Make You Question If You Are Afraid Of The Dark

It is the season to be scared and spooked and if you plan to drown yourself in the horrors of everything entertainment, I have a treat for ya. Now considering Halloween is almost here, I am going to assume that you are looking for new horror movies and shows to watch. And this is where I come in, your neighbourhood weeb, to bombard you with anime recommendations to tide you over till the day of the dead is here. So, here are 5 anime recommendations by yours truly for you to watch.

1. Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories (闇芝居 – Yami Shibai)

Each episode of the Yamishibai series is only a few minutes long and is comprised of several short stories. Every episode starts with a masked kamishibai (paper play) storyteller cycling to a playground at 5 PM, gathering the kids around, and narrating stories using a pair of decorated paper boards that are mounted on the back of his bicycle. The stories are based on Japanese mythology and urban legends. Many of these tales have a historical basis or were originally told orally and then spread. Yamishibai retells several tales that have been going through Japan and turns them into 3 or 4 minute animated shorts for everyone. Not only does Yamishibai delivers horror in short palatable pieces while being genuinely horrifying at the same time.

2. Another (アナザー – Anazā)

Another is a more recent anime that entices fans of traditional horror anime. Another centres on the lead character, Koichi Sakakibara, who recently transferred to Yomiyama Middle School, and the mysterious eyepatch-wearing Mei Misaki and takes situated in a city full of secrets. Another has generated buzz because to its unusual and gory death sequences. It strikes the ideal mix between the supernatural and scares, making it the ideal introduction to thriller and horror anime series.

3. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls (コープスパーティー – Kōpusu Pātī: Tortured Souls – Bōgyaku Sareta Tamashii no Jukyō)

Corpse Party is a is a 4 episode OVA based starts with a group of students saying goodbye to a friend who is getting ready to transfer to another school. They choose to carry out a rite known as ‘Sachiko Ever After’, which is said to seal their eternal friendship. However, after the students perform the ceremony, everyone passes out and wakes up in Heavenly Host Elementary School, a nightmarish place where corpses and evil spirits haunt the school corridors. Separated from one another, the students must figure out a way to escape the school leave , or they will join the spirits and haunt Heavenly Host Elementary School for all eternity. Fun fact: the anime is based on the Japanese video game Corpse Party.

4. Boogiepop Phantom (ブギーポップは笑わない – Bugīpoppu wa Warawanai)

Boogiepop Phantom is an anime wherein there is a rumour going around that a character resembling a reaper called the Boogiepop roams the streets and kidnaps females before they turn ugly. Students start to vanish, and it’s up to the students to put together what’s going on in the town. The animation is presented in bits and from various angles, which is undoubtedly an unusual method of conveying the story. Boogiepop is an undervalued anime that deserves to be watched since it combines a unique visual aesthetic with psychological horror.

5. Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブルー – Pāfekuto Burū)

Helmed by master storyteller, Satoshi Kon, Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller about Mima, a famous Japanese pop idol, who had no inkling that one person’s obsession would quickly become out of hand when she made the decision to leave her band, Cham, and switch to acting. Death threats, letter bombs, and a fake website that tracks her every step have Mima slowly getting trapped in a nightmare from which she can’t seem to awaken. Can she identify the murderer before she is the next victim as the deaths multiply and her mental health deteriorates?

And trust me when I say, there is a host of horror content in anime and these are just a few you can start with. However, if you are someone who is weak-hearted enough to consider Death Note to be a horror, I am not sure if you are cut out for these. Probably challenge yourself to true horror this Halloween?
