‘The Male Feminist’: Rakul Preet Singh On Male and Female Stereotypes, Says “Sabke Sath Hota Hai”

There is no end to the stereotypes men and women are subjected to. From how they look, behave and dress to what kind of activities are suitable for each, society has set a clear divide on the roles of a man and a woman. On the latest episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, with host Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Rakul Preet Singh talks about how both men and women are body-shamed and stereotyped. The Chhatriwali actress also shared how attraction is subjective to everyone and how physical traits cannot be generalised to be attractive for all.

Talking about male and female stereotypes, Rakul Preet Singh, said to Siddhaarth, AKA The Male Feminist, that we read about stereotypes in matrimonial ads. She said, “Don’t we hear, ‘wanted a thin, fair, tall, English-speaking’ girl. And this is obviously stereotyping.” She also said that men and women get put into boxes according to their appearances.

The Chhatriwali star further added, “When a guy or a girl is fat and they fit into the normative sense that we have created for them, people laugh at them.” Further ahead, in the video when Siddhaarth asked her if there is more pressure on girls to look “attractive”, she said, “What is attractive? To me intellect is attractive, and for everyone, it is a different definition.”

Rakul Preet Singh also said that if someone is feminine, it does not mean that they cannot be tomboy-ish at heart. She said, “I am a girlie girl otherwise but I am not very sensitive like the way girls operate.” She said that if she is not working, she does not care about her looks or her hairstyle. And she said that she does not even want to care about these things because then, there is no end to the pressure one takes on themselves.

We absolutely agree with Rakul Preet Singh here. There are so many norms set by society that it is best to steer away from them.
