There have been many times when K-pop idols faced criticism just for reading feminist books. As per reports, many male fans even burnt their merchandise after seeing their favourite artists reading a feminist novel or carrying a phone case with a women empowerment quote. Sadly, this pressure is not only for female idols. Male idols also face the same kind of backlash when they show support for it.
BTS’s V, aka Kim Taehyung, recently opened up about the books he read during his military service. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he shared that a friend suggested books by South Korean writer Han Kang and Japanese author Keigo Higashino. These two writers became his top choices while serving. He also read a philosophy book called Eleven Steps. V said that with every book, he liked to imagine himself inside the story and feel what the characters were feeling. Also, reading helped him think deeply during his quiet days in the military.
Earlier, when Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024, V posted a message on Instagram to celebrate her. He mentioned that he had read her book Human Acts during his service. However, some online groups with strong anti-feminist views criticised him for showing appreciation. Despite the negative comments, the members stayed true to themselves and did not let the backlash affect them.
But why?
Well, Han Kang is known for writing stories that explore difficult topics like life under strict social rules, the struggles women face in a male-dominated world, and the courage to stand against unfair norms. Her works often touch on pain, humanity, and resistance. On the other hand, Keigo Higashino is a popular Japanese author famous for mystery novels. Many of his books have been turned into movies and TV shows.

Honestly, it is refreshing to see V openly talk about these authors. As a huge celebrity loved by millions of people, his words and moves carry a lot of power. By sharing what he reads and praising these writers, he shows that men can enjoy these books. In the K-pop world, where K-pop idols sometimes get judged for small things, the ‘Slow Dancing’ singer’s attitude feels brave.
It also matters because it proves BTS members stay true to themselves even when they are facing pressure.
