Blind Review: Sonam Kapoor, Purab Kohli’s Crime Thriller Is Missing Thrill And Script!
hauterrfly Rating: 1.5 / 5

Our ultimate favourite star Sonam Kapoor is making a comeback and her big OTT debut with a crime thriller film titled Blind. Directed by Shome Makhija, Blind is the remake of the 2011 Korean film of the same name. Starring Sonam Kapoor in the lead role and Purab Kohli as the antagonist, Blind also stars Vinay Pathak, Lillete Dubey and Shubham Saraf among others. Blind is set to premiere on the leading OTT platform JioCinema on July 7. Here’s our review of the crime thriller film.

The Story Of Blind

Shot in Glasgow, Scotland, Blind stars Sonam Kapoor as a former blind cop Gia Singh. A late-night cab ride results in a chance encounter with a man (played by Purab Kohli) who might be the serial killer that the authorities are searching for. But the cab driver has a secret and when Gia approaches the authorities to inform them that she has information about the serial killer and the kidnapping of the girls, her disability makes it tough for them to believe her. However, as Sonam Kapoor’s Gia proves herself by showing the concerned police officer, DI Prithvi (played by Vinay Pathak), that her other sense can make her a useful eyewitness, he is quick to seek her help in the investigation. As another witness, Nikhil Saraf (played by Shubham Saraf) comes forwards, things get complicated after the killer gets wind of it and attempts to kill the eyewitness. And soon after, the killer challenges Gia and puts everything and everyone she loves in danger including her guide dog Elsa Singh (played by Elsa).

Cast And Characters

Sonam Kapoor as Gia Singh: Sonam Kapoor is finally back and it’s double dhamaka because not only is Blind her comeback film but also her OTT debut and NGL but the actress is very convincing as a former blind cop on a mission. But at the same time, the actress does falter here and there and you won’t be able to miss Sonam Kapoor’s misses!

Purab Kohli as The Driver: Purab Kohli is a true blue OTT actor and has time and again proved himself however, there isn’t enough of Purab in Blind to comment if he managed to pull off his negative character and do justice to it or not. Saara injustice toh script ne villain ke saath kiya hai!

Vinay Pathak as DI Prithvi: Vinay Pathak is a delight to watch as always. The actor keeps it breezy with his cop DI Prithvi. His impeccable acting holds your attention. He didn’t just save the day but he did his bit to save the film. But did he do justice to his character? He definitely did and some!

Shubham Saraf as Nikhil Saraf: Shubham Saraf did not have a very significant role or screentime in the film but he had my attention and not just because he looks like a younger Ayushmann Khurana but because the boy knows how to act and I can’t wait to see more of him!

Lillete Dubey as Gia’s Mother: Despite being known for her kickass acting skills, you’ll hardly notice Lillete Dubey in the film with most of the focus being on Sonam Kapoor. Lillete’s character hardly had any screen time or focus which makes me wonder why the makers made it seem like her character holds significance from the way they sold the film!

Elsa as Elsa Singh: This dog deserves a special mention for her acting skills. She’s probably the only actor in the entire film who had me invested in her story.

The rest of the supporting cast delivered their best but there was no saving this sightless, scriptless film with lack of direction and path!

Verdict:  Plodding Pace, Purab Kohli’s Underutilised Villain Ruins Sonam Kapoor Starrer

I will begin with everything that worked for this film. The performances are the only thing that made this remake slightly bearable, baaki sab toh hope ka kamaal tha. The cinematography is good but it does not offer a fresh perspective. Sonam Kapoor tried her best to do justice to her character but she did lose sight of her character every now and then. Moreover, the actress failed to hold my attention or make me feel invested in her story especially after I spotted her smiling 5 minutes after finding out that her dog Elsa is no more. More so because Elsa was the only one who had everyone invested in her story with her kickass acting skills. From her whining when her mom leaves her home to rushing to rescue her mom, she made every single person feel heartbroken after her death.

Purab Kohli is known for his power-packed performances but the script and screenplay had nothing to offer the actor. With very little screen time, no back story, no character development or buildup, there was very little the actor could’ve done to save the film. Having said that, the film had very little to offer in terms of direction, script and screenplay. Being a crime thriller, the film had no thrill. It does not make you sit on the edge of your seat, biting your nails in hopes of finding out what’s coming next. The reason – it’s predictable AF. While Purab did come across as a brutal killer, his crimes were missing from the story. No one knows why he’s killing, how he’s killing and more importantly, how he’s kidnapping and torturing these women. With all the focus on Sonam Kapoor’s comeback, they failed to make this crime thriller about the crime or the criminal and focused on the hero giving the audience nothing to hold onto or look forward to.

To make matters worse, the pace of the film falters far too much. Blind starts slow and gives you hope that it will pick up but by the second half, there’s hardly anything holding one’s attention. As if the plodding pace wasn’t bad enough, the lack of a climax will leave you disappointed. I mean, it does have a climax but the climax doesn’t really climax like a climax should climax, get it? The final fight between Sonam Kapoor’s blind cop and Purab Kohli’s serial killer is more boring than sitting home on a Saturday night. But hey, the last few punches are sure to elicit a laugh! The lack of buildup in this thriller is not thrilling at all.

To make matters worse, the psychology and back story of this serial killer is MIA and that’s not helping the case. Till the very end, you will sit there and hope to find out why the killer did what he did but guess what? We’ll never know! FYI, Purab Kohli’s killer also has a professional life and you’ll see a glimpse of it and hope that there’s more to it but you’ll never find out. And it looks like this serial killer has 7 lives because even after being set on fire by Sonam Kapoor’s character, he seems to come back to life. I wonder how! However, the one thing that truly did enrage me is the fact that this killer does not even have a name. The credits show his name as ‘The Driver’. Need I say more?

It’s no surprise that despite all the amazing actors and their performances I could not bring myself to rate this film more than 1.5 stars out of 5. And if you still have the guts to go ahead and watch this film, it’s streaming on JioCinema from July 7 onwards.
