BFI Curator: I Would Vote For Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi In BAFTA

Alia Bhatt garnered immense attention and praise from family, friends, fans and critics alike for her work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. And TBH, the film really was mindblowing. Alia Bhatt left us all surprised with her amazing portrayal of a social activist, sex worker and the madam of a brothel in Mumbai’s Kamathipura in the 1960s, Gangubai Kothewali aka Gangubai Kathiawadi.

If being critically acclaimed wasn’t enough, Alia Bhatt has now been hailed by Head Curator and BFI (British Film Institute) National Archive’s Robin Baker. Taking to Instagram, Robin Baker shared some screenshots of Alia in Gangubai Kathiawadi and praised her performance. Sharing that if he was a BAFTA or the Academy member, he said that he would definitely vote for her under the category of Best Actress for her performance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Elaborating further about Alia’s character, Baker shared that it’s interesting to watch her character grow and develop.

Calling Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathaiwadi a “big, brash, sentimental” film, Robin Baker said that it’s enjoyable but Alia Bhatt is “sensational”. He also highlighted how the film uses classic Hindi cinema references including the scene where the sex workers go to watch a film as well as Alia’s character’s love for Dev Anand and other film references used in the film. While concluding, the BFI member urged people who are voting for the BAFTA and Academy Awards to log onto Netflix and watch the film at the earliest.
