BAFTA Awards 2022 Paid A Special Tribute To Lata Mangeshkar And Dilip Kumar And Indians Couldn’t Help But Be Grateful For The Recognition

In recent times, we’ve lost some really precious gems of Bollywood. And the most recent being the death of veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar. It was on February 6, 2022, that India lost its nightingale to Covid and pneumonia. I think it would be safe to say that the singer’s death had not only India but also the entire world mourning. In fact, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards that was held on March 13, 2022, even paid a tribute to Lata Mangeshkar and late actor Dilip Kumar who passed away on July 7, 2021.

In their online obituary to Lata Mangeshkar, BAFTA wrote, “An Indian playback singer, who recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for more than 1,000 Hindi films over a career spanning 70 years. Mangeshkar rarely appeared on screen, preferring instead to record the songs that other actors would later lipsync. She became the first Indian artist to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in 1974. Her film credits list is vast, but notable songs featured in Anamika (1973), Aasha (1980), Dil Se.. (1998) and Rang De Basanti (2006). In 2001, she was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.”

BAFTA’s online obituary for Dilip Kumar read, “An Indian actor who is widely considered one of the greatest of his generation and a pioneer of method acting in India. During the 1950s, he starred in some of the most successful films of the decade, including Devdas (1955), Madhumati (1958) and Mughal-e-Asam (1960). He retired in 1998, having made 60-plus films and earning nine of the Indian film industry’s prestigious Filmfare Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Needless to say, the tribute by BAFTA for Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar touched the hearts of many Indians who then took to Twitter to thank the British Academy for the same. Check out their tweets:
