Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman read the Budget 2024 on February 1, Thursday. This year’s budget gave special attention to empowering women in the country. Sitharaman announced changes in the Lakhpati Didi scheme that was mentioned by PM Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech. In the new budget, the scheme was enhanced to target 3 crore women from that of 2 crore. This decision comes as a strong step to making the country’s women self-reliant.
What Is Lakhpati Didi Scheme
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first one to talk about this scheme in his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2023. The scheme was is initiative to make women capable of getting jobs and becoming financially independent. Initially, it was supposed to target 2 crore women, but in the recent Budget, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the number was increased from 2 crore to 3 crore. The Lakhpati Didi scheme invests in giving technical skill training to women to make them capable of earning at least a lakh annually. While talking about the scheme, Nirmala Sitharaman also announced that one crore women have already benefitted from the Lakhpati Didi scheme. She also stated that the government is focused on speeding up the Anganvadi programmes too.

Moreover, the Lakhpati Didi schemes strive to teach women skills that can help them earn one lakh yearly by staying at home. These skills include making LED bulbs, plumbing, tailoring, weaving and drone operations among others. PM Narendra Modi has also stated the government plans to enhance this scheme as much as possible so that more and more women can become self-reliant and also support their families.
