7 Viral Trends That Ruled Social Media In India In 2021

Ever since Instagram reels were introduced in August 2020, the world of social media changed forever. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more people were on the internet and that, in turn, made the reel feature even more popular. In fact, ever since then, the social media trends picked up that continued all the way into 2021. And now that we’re at the end of the year, let’s do a throwback and look at some of the social media trends that went viral in India.

Not going to lie, for most of my time when I ran out of books, social media was my saviour – especially because all of us were locked inside our homes with nowhere to go. And I believe that it was exactly that boredom and the need to do something that gave birth to such different creative trends that went viral in India. I mean, do all of us remember the song Yashraj Mukhate created? Yep, I’m talking about ‘Rasode Mein Kaun Tha’ (I know you are singing it as you read).

But compared to the year 2020, this year – that is 2021 – has seen way more viral trends that are honestly difficult to get out of your head. If you’ve by any means forgotten them, then let me refresh your memory. Here are 7 trends that ruled social media in India in 2021:

1. Yashraj Mukhate

After his super hit, Rasode Mein Kaun Tha in 2020, Yashraj Mukhate came back in 2021 with yet another catchy song Pawri Hori Hai. In the song, he used a clip of Pakistani influencer Dananeer to create the ‘pawri’ song of the year. Needless to say, the song spread like wildfire.

2. Bachpan Ka Pyaar

It was in July when Sahdev Dirdo, a 10-year-old boy’s cover of Badshah’s song ‘Bachpan Ka Pyar’ took social media by storm. Watching him sing the song with a straight face in a classroom just added to its randomness.

3. Manike Mage Hithe

This track sung by Sri Lankan singers Yohani Diloka De Silva and Satheeshan has been trending on social media for months now. You’d have to be living under a rock to not hear the track since its release in May 2021.

4. iPhone Lock Screen

It’s a trend where you stay still for a few seconds to create a wallpaper-like illusion until the chorus of ‘Banna Re’ hits in the background. A fairly new trend that has celebrities also joining in.

5. Show Us Your Name In Urban Dictionary

This is also a fairly new Instagram trend that uses the ‘Add Yours’ feature of the app. The trend that asked people to show the meaning of their name according to Urban dictionary had many joining in till the trend went completely viral.

6. Runaway Aurora

This has to be by far my most favourite visual trend. The challenge of this trend is to give perfect still poses at a particular beat of the song – Runaway by Norwegian singer Aurora. And I have to say there are so many pretty and creative reels that I’ve come across on this trend.

7. Jugnu Challenge

The Jugnu dance challenge trend started as a way for Badshah to promote his song and it did. But that’s not all to the story. People on the internet saw the Jugnu dance and made their own versions of it which made this challenge go completely viral.

Writing this, I just realised it feels like tomorrow when these trends were trending and yet somehow we’re already at the end of 2021. Am I the only one who feels like this year went too quickly?
