Come On, There’s No Shame In Admitting That You Like Trashy TV!

If I were to associate a habit with the Indian public, you know, like the national habit of common Indian people? It has got to be gossiping. We love to hear gossip about our favourite celebrities, our friends, our families, our neighbours and literally, anybody, anywhere. This is probably what makes trashy TV series so very popular, in our country. We love them and encourage them to stay around for more and more seasons. I mean, Bigg Boss has literally had 15 seasons and has also been confirmed for season 16.

But, What Exactly Is Trashy TV?

If you’re wondering what comes under this category, let’s clarify, trashy tv can literally be defined as the genre of television series which are like talk shows with little educational content. These shows also tend to focus on stirring up controversies and showcasing confessions as well as confrontations.

They’re the gossip-laden aunties of TV shows that we eat up like cake. One of the most common examples of this would be Koffee With Karan. I mean, come on. I’m sure you saw this name coming miles ago. Trashy TV has always worked. Literally from the beginning of the peak of television, we have been glued to our screens for this genre of television. But, have you ever wondered why shows like Indian Matchmaking work?

So, Why Do These TV Shows Work?

These shows also draw a lot of hate. They are often looked down upon because of their over-dramatisation and ridiculous exaggeration of literally everything. Yet, despite being considered low-quality with its cheap tactics and sometimes, cheaper production value, it remains one of the most popular genres of TV. This genre pulls in massive amounts of money and an ever-increasing viewership with each episode. Why do you think that is? Well, isn’t it obvious? It’s us! We love trashy TV and are just scared and ashamed to admit to this fact. Fighting, crying, and drama are all key elements of trash tv shows, accompanied by dramatized editing and overly-intense music. Many look down upon the genre, yet have at least one show in this genre as a guilty pleasure. It’s a fact.

I genuinely feel that it’s about time that we take the reigns and accept the fact that we love these shows. They make us feel up, close and personal with our favourite celebrities along with getting us the inside scoop that we crave. Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Do you? Furthermore, we live in the era of bingeing content and this should include all types and genres of content especially, super entertaining stuff like trashy tv. I mean, one can’t be expected to always want to stick to educational shows, can they? Let’s face it, nobody is that big a nerd. We crave fun and entertainment and these shows supply that in surplus. Plus, we also relate to the characters as a whole.

I mean, who doesn’t love the amount of gossip that spills on Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives, huh? We don’t really expect to be glued to such shows but it just ends up happening, somehow. We get to look behind the wall of paparazzi, secrecy and rumours and see our favourite celebrities talk about their lives, themselves and their families, it makes us feel like they care and like we belong, that’s always a beautiful feeling.

Another thing that really bothers me, personally, is the very name of this genre. I mean, why do we even call them trashy when they’re so addictive, entertaining and fun for most of us? I really feel like most people try to hate these shows only because we associate them to trash. I swear. This should be changed.

So, at the end of the day, we have to leave the shame aside and admit the fact that our constant love-hate relationship with these TV shows is mostly love after all, huh?
