5 Thoughts I Had While Watching Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari Trailer. Manoj Bajpayee Is A Reverse Sima Taparia In This Matchbreaking Story!
I’ve been in this arranged marriage ka chakkar enough to know that what’s on the bio data is not usually what’s on IRL. I remember when my mother was registering me on a matrimonial website, I made her put down a ‘Yes’ for drinking socially. Surprisingly, I saw that there were many guys I ended up talking to off there who had written a ‘No’ but were all gung-ho about drinking like fishes. Jo dikhta hai wohi mile aisa zaruri nahi. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had someone who properly vetted these rishtas for us before we took the plunge and realised something’s off too late? That’s exactly what Manoj Bajpayee’s character appears to be in Zee Studios’ newest film, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari! Directed by Abhishek Sharma, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh as Suraj, a prospective groom looking for rishtas. Bajpayee’s Mangal Rane is a detective who sabotages him, and thus ensues a hilarious conflict!

The film, also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh as Rane’s younger sister. As Suraj vows to seek revenge on the Indian match-breaker, he decides he’ll probably use the oldest sexist trick in the book and pataao Rane’s sister to get back at him. We know that the smart as a Sherlock detective finds out too late. And something tells me Suraj is going to fall truly in love with the girl. But in the meantime, a cross-dressing Manoj Bajpayee and a naturally funny Diljit facing off might just entertain us. We also have Supriya Pilgaonkar, Annu Kapoor, Seema Pahwa and Manoj Pahwa, four incredible actors with amazing comic timing, playing super savage parents. And the film is directed by Abhishek Sharma, who gave us Tere Bin Laden and The Zoya Factor. So I have… expectations!
Here are 5 thoughts I had while watching the Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari trailer!
1. Diljit Dosanjh is adorbs but too many ‘doodh’ jokes spoil the broth, theek hai?
So Diljit always jeetos our dil with his innocent comedy. Here too, he plays the son of a dairy owner or something, and he is oblivious to the ‘milky’ puns that he keeps making. The writers seem to have milked this attribute (pun intended) for all its worth. And some of them are cringe. I’m really afraid that they’re going to irk me if they get too much. But, let’s not count the milk puns before they’re hatched. Fingers crossed.
2. I’m loving this Sherlock Holmes-meets-Sima Taparia from Indian Matchmaking thing Manoj Bajpayee has going!
At one point in the trailer, Manoj Bajpayee does the whole James Bond barrel shot sequence. And after watching him in The Family Man, I’m game for this. But what really has me excited is the character he is playing! He’s like a reverse Sima Taparia, who does investigations so she can break matches! Bhagwaan tumhara bhala kare, beta! Since the movie is set in 1995, when Mumbai was Bombay and internet didn’t exist as it were, hiring a private detective was the only way to ‘nikaalo someone shareef shana’s real kundali’, if you know what I mean.
Whatever I’ve seen of Bajpayee so far in the trailer, I’ve loved. He seems to be extracting real joy in the work he does. I’d love to know some interesting back story as to why he chose this profession. In Indian Matchmaking, we saw that Sima Taparia had this slew of professionals on her roster, like an astrologer or a life coach, who’d help couples out. Maybe Madhu Mangal Rane is the missing piece she needs to get better at her matchmaking!

3. I’ve noticed that the parents in Bollywood movies are getting savage by the day! Me gusta!
Weren’t we so done with the Alok Nath brand of parenting? We all know that IRL parents and grandparents can get super savage and cut us with their sharp tongues. So it’s awesome how that’s getting more authentic representation on-screen. Both Mangal’s father and Suraj’s father seem to be doing an excellent job sassing their sons. But my favourite part comes right at the end of the trailer when Bajpayee’s Mangal gets slayed by his mom! The way Annu Kapoor laughs is exactly how I laughed!
4. Does the song ‘Basanti Aaj Kutton Ke Saamne Na Naach’ have social commentary subtext?
Alright, let’s have it. I finally want to tender an apology to grandparents worldwide who would say, “Gaane toh humaare zamaane ke hote the!” Because truly, the songs we get now-a-days are utter trash. But here’s the thing, if you’re going to use bizarre lyrics and item songs, you might as well do it for a purpose, eh? The song that plays through most of the trailer goes “Basanti Aaj Kutton Ke Saamne Na Naach”. It’s a nice play on Dharam paaji’s dialogue from Sholay. But the reason I believe it has more subtext here is that Manoj Bajpayee’s detective is actually helping women avoid bad marriages.
In some ways, you could picture him telling the girls that they don’t need to cater to these men, who are hiding their true faces before you. And that, I think, is beautiful and deep.
5. Bollywood’s really coming up with innovative stories, and I’m here for it!
When I saw the first few seconds of the trailer, I thought, here we go again. This is another typical Bollywood love story about some entitled male trying to find the one girl who can rehabilitate him. But the film’s premise definitely is hatke! And this makes me glad that while at one end we keep falling for these stupid remakes and rehashes, the medium and small-budget Bollywood films are finally tackling unique, relatable subjects. They’ve got the right mix of humour, reality, drama, sprinkled with some social commentary and just enough star power to carry the film but not overpower it. I’m here for this new kind of cinema!
Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari will have a Diwali release.
