Which Is The Most Important Day In Pride Month? Here Are All The Deets On Stonewall Riots

Get all your Pride merch out because it is the month to flaunt them all! No, I am not saying that you should only support the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride month in fact, you should be louder than ever in your support during this time. This is the time to shower support, spread awareness about gay rights, and call out homophobic trolls. But did you know that a riot in a gay bar started this whole movement where people stood up against police harassment and even organised pride marches? And it is this day of the riot that is considered the most important day in entire Pride Month.

As the story goes, queer people would come to enjoy at a gay bar called Stonewall Inn which is situated in Lower Manhattan, New York. On June 28, 1969, which was another regular day of chilling and chit-chatting at the inn, the police suddenly marched in to raid the place. This was not the first time such a raid had taken place but surely the first time people fought back!

The police would often harass the peaceful people who were just there at the bar to have a good time. But on June 28, 1969, people did not let the police get away with this misbehaviour and fought back. They protested against these raids and the harassment the queer community faced at the hands of the police. The protestors overpowered the police so much so that the cops had to take cover until backup came in.

And right from this day, each year pride marches were organised in the United States Of America and these riots set the precedent for all the upcoming gay rights events and marches. It is also interesting to note the first pride flag was designed by Gilbert Baker. Baker was the friend of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to have been elected as a public officer.

The history of Pride month is quite interesting, isn’t it? Happy Pride, fellas!
