Prachi Desai Accepts Nepotism As A Reality Even Though It Has Affected Her Career. That’s Quite Mature.

Back when Kangana Ranaut ignited the ’N-word’ debate on Koffee With Karan, we’d only experienced the first batch of star kids become students of the year. The reason that Kangana’s crusade against nepotism in Bollywood grew stronger is because the industry was relentless in its action of sidelining talent in favour of lineage. But eventually, someone pointed out that nepotism was an inevitable part of almost every sphere in our society. And it is something that we’re going to have to learn to accept, while continuing to hustle sincerely. And looks like Prachi Desai too has made the mature decision of accepting that, despite her career trajectory being affected by it.

The Kasamh Se, Bol Bachchan and Rock On!! actor is back in the news after quite a long hiatus. She recently even spoke how her career had stagnated for while but that didn’t mean she was driven to drop it all and get married. In fact, she believes OTT and its growing audience base means there are finally more and better roles for actors like her. In fact, nepotism could possibly be one of the biggest reasons for actors to turn towards streaming series and films, where there’s a real appreciation for talent so far and lots of meaty roles to sink their teeth in.

For Prachi Desai, nepotism is a reality that she has learnt to live with because it’s not really going anywhere, is it? Nepotism is born of this basic instinct to protect and care for one’s progeny. It’s not just human, even creatures have it. So rather than complain about it, Prachi has chosen to rightfully put the onus on the audience to place their support in the right talent.

“See, that’s a reality that is best accepted; there is no point denying it. It has been there, it is there, and it’s probably going to be there. But today, I’m loving the fact that the audience is deciding a lot. So, as long as the audience supports, there will be space for everyone,” she told a leading daily.

Prachi Desai goes on to credit the audience for changing the power balance, because of which actors like her are getting their time in the spotlight to flex acting muscles.

“To be honest, the kind of stuff that I’m getting offered now, and which wasn’t coming my way a year or two years ago, is because of the audience. They are the people who have changed everything. As long as the people really like and support us, we will have a place for all outsiders like me.”

And indeed, I strongly feel that ultimately, it is the audience that decides the fates of the starkids, and the worthy are pushed ahead while the ones without talent don’t really go that far, despite their parentage. For example, an Alia Bhatt may have gotten her first Dharma gig through nepotistic connections, but it is only because of her talent as an actor that she gets the kind of roles she does. Meanwhile, there are also star kids who are talented, like Abhishek Bachchan, but who are cursed with larger than life stardoms of their parents, which means they’re often expected to outshine their parents. And when they don’t, perhaps because of the immense pressure, they’re shunned and ridiculed for it.

So Prachi Desai is bang on with her approach. Just work hard, and it will ultimately pay off, nepotism be damned. The actor plays a cop in Silence… Can You Hear It?, which also stars Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Mathur.
