5 Thoughts I Had After Watching The ‘Never Have I Ever’ Season 2 Trailer: A Messy Lead, A Love Triangle And Competition? Gimme Gimme!

One of the best things about the American coming-of-age high school drama, Never Have I Ever, is that it isn’t afraid of letting its protagonist, Devi Vishwakumar, be a total a**hole. That’s exactly what a lot of teens are at that age. A mind burdened with issues and questions of who they are and where they are going, they’re still focussed entirely on things like dating, popularity and physical appearances. That is, until something shakes them out of it. And from the looks of the Never Have I Ever Season 2 trailer, Devi is totally on a collision course! The show, that became a watershed moment for South Asian representation in American television, iscreated by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher. It stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Darren Barnet, Karen Levinson, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Richa Moorjani, Poorna Jagannathan, Niecy Nash and John McEnroe as the narrator.

You remember how we left Devi & Co, at the end of Never Have I Ever Season 1? Devi had been fighting with her mother, who had decided that they would be returning to India. She was also fighting with her friends, Eleanor and Fabiola, because she ignored them to when they needed her the most to be with Paxton. Oh Paxton, the hot guy she wanted to be her boyfriend all year. And he kissed her! But then Devi kissed Ben Gross, her nemesis turned friend turned the guy who let her stay in his house when she ran away from home and who helped her make things good with her mom and her friends! Whoa, complicated much?

So clearly, it’s time to sort all those convoluted threads of her life in Season 2 and finally deal with her issues from the death of her father, right? Wrong! In Season 2, Devi is about to top the existing pizza pie of complications in her life with another layer of cheese. She’s going to date both Paxton and Ben, because they both get different sides of her personality. She’s going to find new reasons to fight with her mother, and not listen to her friends. Bonus: There’s some new competition in school, with Aneesa, a new Indian-American student who Devi thinks is a threat because she looks hotter and is smarter too. Meanwhile, her cousin, Kamala, having broken up with Steve and had a heart to heart with her prospective groom, Prashant, is slowly coming into her own too. A transformation I’m excited to see. Season 2 definitely looks exciting!

Here are five thoughts I had after watching the Never Have I Ever Season 2 trailer!

1. OMG, I am still not sure if I am Team Paxton or Team Ben!

I think I really need to see some more of Devi’s Pros and Cons board to make my decision. Paxton is hot, and now that his sister has drilled some sense into him, he has finally seen the light, and is really sweet with Devi. But I am not sure if it’s just a temporary thing because she was so interested in him or if he really likes her. As for Ben, he’s in every way Devi’s equal, and he even helped her get her life in order. He seems mature, and I have a feeling he might be good for Devi in terms of dealing with her problems. But then again, he too has daddy issues. So…. Ugh! This is so confusing! What team are you on?

2. I am so excited for Fabiola’s fabulous new romance with Eve, and do we see more of Prashant and Kamala?

I really love Fabiola’s character and her journey, accepting her sexuality and coming out to her parents. It was sweet! She and Eve make a cute couple and I am eager to see what’s next for them. With

3. Would you look at all these new characters and additions to the cast!

Now that Ben’s a friend not a nemesis, that position’s vacant. Not for long though, because enter Megan Suri as Aneesa, a new Indian student who is joining Sherman Oaks, Devi looks at her like competition so that means she is definitely going to do something she’s going to regret later. Not just Devi’s love life though, but even her mom’s love life might get a boost this season, because the rapper Common has been cast as Dr. Chris Jackson, a dermatologist who works with her. I wonder what’s going to brew there!

Other new additions include Utkarsh Ambudkar, whos joins as Mr. Kulkarni, an English teacher at Devi’s school, and P.J. Byrne, who is the head research assistant at Caltech, where Kamala is!

4. Will Devi finally deal with her deep-seated issues around her father’s death?

She might have a love-hate relationship with her therapist, Dr. Jamie Ryan, but Devi fought with her when Dr. Ryan suggested she find another therapist who could help her better since they haven’t made any real progress. Devi is still not ready to talk about what happened to her when her father suddenly died and why she lost the use of her legs for that brief period after. It was clearly psychosomatic, but she will have to open about and deal with it. Something tells me that might just happen in the second half of this season.

5. I wonder what guest stars are lined up to do voiceovers this season!

Last season, we got Andy Samberg turning narrator for the episode that was from Ben Gross’ perspective, and it was a lot of fun. I wonder if we will have any more of such shifts in POVs and which guest stars will take over the narration for those! The narration is one of my favourite things about this show!

Never Have I Ever Season 2 will drop on Netflix on July 15! I can’t wait, I want this NOW!
