Kolkata’s Durga Puja Enters UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage List. A Proud Moment For India!

Kolkata’s Durga Puja holds great significance in India. It is an annual celebration that pays homage to the goddess Maa Durga. According to Hindu mythology, it celebrates the victory of good over evil. Now the auspicious festival has entered the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s a proud moment for India and for the City of Joy. Many people expressed their happiness on social media including PM Narendra Modi and West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

UNESCO took to its Twitter handle and shared the news, “Durga Puja in Kolkata has just been inscribed on the intangible heritage list. Congratulations India,” it read with a picture of Goddess Durga. Currently, the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has 492 elements.

 

The decision was made during the sixteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage from 13th to 18th December. The inscription of Durga Puja on the UNESCO website reads, “Durga Puja is seen as the best instance of the public performance of religion and art, and as a thriving ground for collaborative artists and designers. The festival is characterized by large-scale installations and pavilions in urban areas, as well as by traditional Bengali drumming and veneration of the goddess. During the event, the divides of class, religion and ethnicities collapse as crowds of spectators walk around to admire the installations.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared the news 0n their respective social media handles.

To date, 14 intangible cultural heritage elements from India have been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These elements include the Kumbh Mela, Novruz, Ramlila, Tradition of Vedic chanting, Kutiyattam, Sanskrit theatre; Ramman, religious festival and ritual theatre of the Garhwal Himalayas; Kalbelia folk songs and dances of Rajasthan; and Chhau dance.
