Just like books, I’ve also found my escape through music. Just plugging in your earpods and drowning the world around you, is what I honestly live for. I love songs that make me want to groove, make me feel like I’m a force of nature, pick me up on my bad and worst days, make me feel like I’m so much more, and everything in between. But then there are some songs that make me cherish being a woman. Songs that empower, celebrate, validate, and affirm womanhood. If you haven’t guessed it by now, then let me tell you, I have a playlist that highlights women and womanhood. And on Women’s Day, I’m here to share my playlist.
Uh uh uh… not so fast. Before I share my woman-centric playlist with y’all, I have a bit of a surprise list of tracks. Seeing that everyone on Team Hauterrfly loves listening to music (duh uh), I asked them for a song that fits perfectly well with my Women’s Day playlist and why they like the song.

1. Jinal Bhatt, Editor: Suddenly I See By KT Tunstall
It plays in the opening of The Devil Wears Prada, it’s like a power anthem to sort of get you going on whatever your plan is for the day, and very aspirational too. Like you wanna be the girl being talked about in the song.
2. Janvi Manchanda, Senior Writer: Dance For You By Beyoncé
TBH, this song makes me feel sexually empowered. It’s sexy and it makes me feel sexy. Though Beyoncé dances for a guy on this song, I dance for me. And what’s sexier than dancing for yourself, to just sort of fall in love with your own self. This song really made me love my body and sort of own it. More so because I’ve taken dancing lessons in exotic dance and this song helps me enjoy my own moves for myself.
3. Priyadarshini Malavia: Scars To Your Beautiful By Alessia Cara
This song has always resonated with me. As someone who has mental health issues and struggles with eating disorders, it always makes me feel as though Alessia is talking about and to me. So yeah, scars to your beautiful has picked me up on days when I didn’t have it in me to get out of bed, that’s how it empowers me.
4. Preeti Singh, Writer: Speechless By Naomi Scott
The song gives me strength when I’m feeling down after hearing that girls are not smart or worthy enough. The song is quite hard-hitting and makes me feel like I can achieve anything in this world

5. Jasveen Kaur, Writer: God Is A Woman By Ariana Grande
It touches upon topics like sexuality, cultural norms and is a celebration of womanhood with lyrics like “And I can be all the things you told me not to be.” Plus Madonna’s surprising cameo as God reciting a verse from the Bible as, is my fav. part. It’s powerful, dreamy and definitely a Female Anthem that empowers its listeners (including myself).
6. Ritu Sanghvi, Writer: Fight Song By Rachel Plattern
It is my all-time go-to pick-me-up song. It motivates me to not give up when the days get tough and push through. It motivates me to fight for everything I believe in.
7. Neeharika Singh, Designer: Most Girls By Hailee Steinfeld
From as far as I can remember, the idea that “Being unlike ‘Most girls’ makes us special”, has been propagated in a variety of media and Pop Culture. I like this song because it truly empowers and celebrates all sorts of women, it brings us all together rather than tearing each other apart, to be seen as better than another woman. The lyrics themselves are so clear and convey a powerful message- “Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful / Most girls work hard, go far, we are unstoppable,” and “Our fight to make every day, no two are the same / I wanna be like, I wanna be like most girls”
