5 Thoughts That Popped Into My Head While Listening To ‘Najaa’ From ‘Sooryavanshi’: Why The Bad Lip Sync?

5 Thoughts That Popped Into My Head While Listening To ‘Najaa’ From ‘Sooryavanshi’: Why The Bad Lip Sync?

A new day, a new Bollywood song that has garnered my and literally everyone’s attention as it recently hit the music scene. ‘Najaa’ is a song from the upcoming Rohit Shetty movie Sooryavanshi. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif with appearances from Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh as well. Having premiered only a few hours ago the song already has 1,368,018 views on Youtube. As someone who has contributed at least 10 of those views, I believe I have dissected and observed ‘Najaa’ from way too many angles and can give you 5 thoughts that sprung into my mind when I heard the song!

1. First things first, seeing Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif paired together for Sooryavanshi after this long was very nostalgic. Both of them have not aged a day and still look just as great together! As an onscreen couple, they look like they are genuinely enjoying each other’s company and are having fun shooting together. Their onscreen chemistry is still palpable and very exciting to witness. Not to mention, LOOK AT HOW HOT KATRINA LOOKS!

2. However, speaking of onscreen chemistry, let me give my 2 cents about the choreography. It is evident that efforts were put into the choreography for ‘Najaa’ from Sooryavanshi and the actors did their best to carry the steps out with full energy. But other than a high energy performance, the choreography was seriously lacking. The steps lacked creativity and there were parts of the video where even an iconic pair like Akshay and Katrina looked awkward and unsynchronized, putting a damper on their onscreen chemistry.

3. The song itself leaves a lot to be desired. ‘Najaa’ from Sooryavanshi is a remake of the hit single ‘Na Ja’ by Pav Dhaaria. However, it does not add anything new to the original song and is just a remake of an original banger with no real effort put into trying to make it something new. The basic tune while catchy is no different than what Dharia did with his own song. Hence, it does not add anything new to the already vast array of unoriginal and basic pop songs we have floating around Bollywood.

4. Also, for some reason attention to detail has been neglected in the music video of ‘Najaa’ from Sooryavanshi. Akshay Kumar’s lipsyncing is completely off and the difference in timing can be seen from a mile away. How has T-Series ignored such a major error is beyond me!

5. Lastly, let me give my opinion on the set and costumes used in the music video. One word to describe them both: basic. I am sorry but it is true! The Sooryavanshi music video lives up to the overall pop trope of a (non-existent) premise in which there are background dancers grooving along with the main couple.

It is a very classic Rohit Shetty music video, the song is shot in an open arena with unnecessarily colourful helicopters and bikes because, why not? Also, the costumes, while functional are super unoriginal. With Akshay and Kat wearing all black against the backdrop of dancers wearing bright and white coloured clothes helps create a visual contrast (which I appreciate); the designs themselves remain uninspired.

As a fan of movies like Welcome and Namastey London seeing Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif back together for Sooryavanshi is very exciting and nostalgic for me. While ‘Najaa’  has its issues with originality in terms of costumes, sets and tune; it is still quite catchy. And I can see this earworm of a song rising up the charts as I myself have heard it at least thrice more while writing this.
