Neena Gupta Reveals She Borrowed Her Cook’s Salwar Kameez To Land A Role In ‘Badhaai Ho’

I honestly do believe that being an actor takes a lot of hard work. I mean, we’ve all heard stories about how actors go out of their way to get into a character and the story – remember the time when Heath Ledger had locked himself in a hotel room for a month and maintained a diary to prepare for the role of Joker in The Dark Knight? And even though all preparations done by actors are not as intense, they’re definitely challenging. In fact, recently in a promo of Kaun Banega Crorepati 13 (KBC 13), Neena Gupta revealed that for Badhaai Ho, she borrowed her cook’s salwar kameez to land the role of Mrs. Kaushik.

Neena Gupta recently appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati 13 alongside her Badhaai Ho co-star Gajraj Rao, where the actress revealed how she had borrowed her cook’s salwar kameez to go for the audition of Mrs. Kaushik. The episode will be airing on December 16th, 2021 at 9 pm.

The Masaba Masaba actress had gained a lot of appreciation for her performance in the 2018 movie – Badhaai Ho starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, and Gajraj Rao. In the KBC 13 episode, Neena Gupta speaks about how she was told by Amit Sharma, the director of the movie, that she had to play the role of a middle-class woman; and so the actress decided to borrow her cook’s clothes for the audition.

Neena Gupta said, “Amit ne mujhe bulaya office mein. Main gayi toh unke assistant se poochha ‘Iss prakar ka role hai, main kya pehen ke jaaon? Taaki unko lage ki main yeh character lag sakti hun.’ Bola, ‘Aise hi middle class hai. Salwar kameez pehen lo.’ Maine kaha ‘Thik hai’ (Amit called me to his office. I asked his assistant ‘This is the role, what should I wear and go so that I look like this character? They said ‘She’s a middle-class woman; you can wear salwar kameez’. I said ‘ok’).” She further added that she ended up borrowing her cook’s salwar kameez and wore that to the audition. Her attire impressed Amit Sharma a lot and that’s how she landed the role in the Badhaai Ho.

To say that I’m impressed would be an understatement. I mean, imagine a well-known celebrity borrowing her cook’s clothes to appear for an audition and then ends up getting a role for a movie that is a blockbuster, surreal right?
