The Most Controversial Things Kangana Ranaut Has Inserted Herself Into For The Year 2021

In truth, Kangana Ranaut is a good actress. Having given us memorable performances in Queen, Fashion, Tanu Wed Manu and Panga, she has proven herself time and again. She is hailed for building a career from the ground up without having connections to the players in Bollywood. Kangana was known as the trailblazer in the movement against the nepotist hierarchy of the cult that is Bollywood. Loved by the masses across the nation, she quickly became a household name and everyone’s favourite. However this year she entertained us not just with her movies; she graced the popular news debate channels and her iPhone camera (posting her “opinions” on popular social media platforms), wreaking havoc and giving us underwhelming performances back to back.

Here is my selection of five controversies Kangana sparked or inserted herself in 2021:

1. When She Said That The 1947 Freedom Struggle was a ‘Bheek’

Her comment was um…groundbreaking to say the least. The India-shattering comment at the Times Summit 2021 where she said, “The freedom we got in 1947 was a ‘bheek’, the citizens of India got real freedom in 2014”, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landslide victory in 2014 elections, caused her to receive a lot of criticism citing that it insults the freedom fighters. Sometimes it’s good to stick to the script, you know.

2. The Saga That Was Kangana Ranaut Vs Farmer’s Protest

Oh, where do I even start with this one…. A friendly piece of advice: Unsolicited opinions are welcomed as much as unsolicited nudes.

In October 2020, Farmer’s protested against the then newly proposed Agricultural Bill or commonly known as Farm Bills. Farmers from India, mainly from the states of Punjab and Haryana, decided to march to the Capital.  This march lasted for a long time, with neither party backing down. This quickly garnered Global attention when RnB American Musician (and our Queen) Rihanna tweeted, “why aren’t we talking about this?!” with the hashtag #FarmersProtest. Soon, international support flew in the form of Mia Khalifa and Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg posting resources to help the farmers. One such document posted by the young activist was an outdated Toolkit which was later revealed to be written by a Canadian pro-Khalistani individual. Immediately upon finding out, Thunberg took down her tweet and later apologised.

Kangana Ranaut popped up on news debates, talking about how this protest was a form of terrorism and saying ‘derogatory’ things targeting the Sikh community. This caught the attention of Diljith Dosanjh, a Punjabi actor and singer hailing from the Sikh community, to speak up in defence of his people. This led to Ranaut taunting him further on Twitter to which Dosanjh responded in a classy manner, gaining the support of the masses. Kangana has now been booked in Mumbai for her derogatory remarks and also for using social platforms to spread misinformation.

3. Twitter, For Once, Did Something Right

Twitter is a great platform to spark important discussions but oftentimes, the platform is quite toxic, leading it to be often forgiving of people whose 280 character virtual tweets have detrimental effects on real society. However, Twitter did the right thing by banning (power move, in my opinion) Kangana Ranaut’s account.

Did that silence the actress? Unfortunately, no. She simply moved on to Instagram criticising the app for banning her and asking why was her freedom of speech curbed. I mean, does it need to be spelt out? She blamed West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee for the alleged violence that took place in the state post its Assembly Election results announcement, sparking yet another controversy.

4. Kangana Ranaut’s Comment On Interfaith Marriage

Not only did Kangana cause an uproar on social media platforms in regards to the infamous Tanishq Ad (which in my opinion was sweet) that openly presented Interfaith Marriage, she inserted herself in the divorce of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. The actor and his now ex-wife were in an Interfaith Marriage and later separated due to undisclosed reasons.

When the pair revealed that they will co-parent their son Azad, Ranaut had an issue stating that why does the near to be raised as a Muslim, why is it that the child has to follow the father’s religion. She said that this is only followed in the Muslim community whereas, in Hindu and Sikh communities, children are raised to engage with both the faiths of their interfaith parents.

This is what I call a ‘task failed successfully’. What could’ve been a genuine conversation about forcing religious beliefs upon children became a criticism against the Muslim community.

A general knowledge titbit- While it is a social condition that the child follows the father’s faith, a child does have the right to religion and can choose which faith to practice.

5. Kangana Vs Bollywood: This Time It’s Personal

Kangana Ranaut had a busy year in Bollywood but not for acting. Apart from getting brutally mocked by Diljith Dosanjh and commenting upon Aamir Khan’s divorce, she got into unnecessary conflict with Tapsee Pannu and Anurag Kashyap.

She called Pannu a ‘B-grade’ actress after the latter had jokingly stated in an interview that she doesn’t miss Kangana on Twitter and that she is “irrelevant” to her personal life. It seems like giving unwarranted opinions runs in the family, as Rangoli, sister of Kangana, chimed in calling Pannu a ‘sasti copy’ of her sister. Again, when Kangana was brought up during the promotional interview of Manmarziyaan where Tapsee was present, Kashyap said that Kangana needs a “double filter.”

He later apologized saying that he was sorry and he only meant it to be a joke. He revealed that he tried to be the peacemaker between the actresses but Kangana was of the mindset that ‘ones who aren’t by her side are her enemies’ and decided to put the conversation between her and the director up for speculation on social media platforms.

Well, clearly Kangana Ranaut has had a busy year for all of the wrong reasons. I don’t understand this need to insert yourself in situations that don’t pertain to you and to get offended when people are pissed about it. Hey! Wild idea but maybe DON’T comment upon things no one asked you about.
