‘Koffee With Karan’ 7: Vijay Deverakonda Talks About ‘Misogyny’ Criticism Around Arjun Reddy. But Ananya’s Answer Is The Real Gold!

Actors Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday arrived on the much-awaited Koffee couch to spill some beans and share the gossip. In episode 4 of Koffee With Karan Season 7, we saw the leading actors of Liger grace the show. While there were a lot of revelations about their career, love and of course sex life, what caught our attention was actor Vijay Deverakonda’s candid reaction to the criticism and love in fewer quantities welcomed by his much popular film Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake–Kabir Singh.

While both the films earned a big thumbs up on the box office, many others pointed fingers at its problematic characters and the idea of portraying abusive relationships in a rather positive light.

Vijay, opened the conversation about the problematic side of the film and its characters and revealed why he chose to do the film, as he talked about his sense of empathy towards the character instead of judgement, and that’s what led him to sign the film. He further went on to say, that he did not find the script “misogynistic” or “anti-feminist.” When questioned about his take on his character Arjun Reddy being abusive with his partner Preethi, Vijay clarified, “I am no one to say if it is right or wrong. But they two did it and they had a happy married life.” He further added, “I am not saying nobody should have a problem with it.” And sighted an example of a woman who must have struggled through an abusive relationship and would feel traumatised to watch something similar happen on the big screen, hence her hate for the character is what he understands, because it takes you back to that pain.

Further being compared with his famous character Arjun Reddy, Vijay said, “I would never raise my hand on my partner. If it reaches a point where I feel anger towards a woman, I will just walk out.”

Well, it wasn’t just Vijay who shared his views on the much-popular debate, but his Liger co-star, Ananya, too spoke candidly about her approach towards the film and the characters, from a woman’s point of view. The actress expressed her love for the songs in the film and every performance. Talking about the abusive relationship shared by Arjun and Preethi, she further added, “I don’t think I would be okay or accepting of that in a relationship at all… I would also not advise even my friends to be okay with it.” She also said that cinema is an impressionable medium, so when people look at something happening on screen, they feel okay replicating it in real life.  Hence, it is something scary for her.

Well, we totally agree with you Ananya. A behaviour as such should never be promoted, neither on screen nor in real life.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda is all set to make his big Bollywood debut with Liger, alongside Ananya Panday. The film has been directed by Puri Jagannadh, who also produced it alongside former actress Charmme Kaur, Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta.
