Grammys 2022 Exclude Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri From In Memoriam Section. Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Gets Tribute

The Oscars got a lot of flack from Indians and Bollywood lovers around the world for not including legendary actor Dilip Kumar in their “In Memoriam” list. And now, Grammys 2022 has invoked similar wrath and criticism for excluding Lata Mangeshkar and Bappi Lahiri from the “In Memoriam” section which included Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

As you must already know, we lost two of the greatest contributors to Hindi and Bollywood music this year. Lata Mangeshkar passed away on January 6 at the age of 92. We unfortunately also lost Bappi Lahiri to obstructive sleep apnea at the age of 69 on February 15. However, while the Grammys included Taylor Hawkins and Tom Parker, they failed to mention these two great Indian musical artists. Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim was also remembered through performances by Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler.

However, Lata Mangeshkar and Bappi Lahiri were given a mention on the Grammys website, despite being neglected in the ceremony itself. However, the fans were not pleased by the lack of attention to the Indian film and music industry. According to reports, the show started off with a list of hundreds to include but the length of the segment pushed them to make cuts and create a more concise and comprehensive list.

Billie Eilish sang her ‘Happier than ever’ title track with her brother Finneas while wearing a t-shirt as a tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins. Additionally, Hawkins was also given a tribute via video montage which was introduced by Trevor Noah with the Foo Fighters’ song ‘My Hero’ played in the background. The band was all set to perform for the Grammys but due to Hawkins’ death, they cancelled their performance and upcoming tour. Noah spoke about the groups’ absence in the year they won 3 awards and said, “But they (Foo Fighters), of course, are not here due to the tragic passing of their legendary drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Our thoughts go out to Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighters family and all of their friends around the world. We would like to take a moment now to remember Taylor.”
