Ever since Alia Bhatt took to her Instagram to share the poster, teaser, trailer, etc. of her upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi I have been anticipating its release. Com’on you cannot sit there and tell me that you’re not excited to see Alia Bhatt playing a powerful underworld woman. I mean, just from looking at her in the trailer – her vibe, her energy, her posture, her attitude, etc. – I’m blown away. No doubt that it is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2022. And this anticipation is not just limited to India. The anticipation is worldwide (now, even more so) since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn is selected to be screened at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Congratulations are in order!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali finished 25years in the film industry and Gangubai Kathiawadi is his 10th film, and there is no doubt that the film has been extremely special for him. I mean, the movie after all was chosen to be screened at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in February. In fact, it also will have its world premiere at the festival.
Gangubai Kathiawadi has been selected to be screened as a part of the Berlinale Special. Berlinale Special is a segment of the International Film Festival where exemplary cinema from around the world is showcased and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie is one of them. This year’s selection criteria are the films that have been shot during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The director of Gangubai Kathiawadi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “The story of Gangubai Kathiawadi has been very close to my heart, and me and my team have given it all to make this dream possible. We take pride and honour in showcasing our film at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival.”

In fact, even the producer of Pen Studios, Jayantilal Gada voiced his thoughts on the selection of the movie – starring Alia Bhatt as the lead – for the Berlin International Film Festival. Gada said that he believed in Bhansali’s craft and that he was extremely happy that the movie has been selected for the film festival. He further added that it was Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn’s performance along with the story that helped the movie reach global audiences.
Speaking about Gangubai Kathiawadi and selecting it for the film festival, the Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian of Berlin International Film Festival said, “We are happy to premiere Gangubai Kathiawadi and continue the tradition of the Berlin Film Festival being a special setting for Indian movies. This time with a film that joins the usual craft in shaping camera movement and the choreography of bodies with a subject that is socially relevant, not only in India. From the very beginning, we were taken by the story of Gangubai, an exceptional woman dragged into exceptional circumstances.”
Hearing this news now makes me want to watch this movie on its first day first show. I genuinely hope that is possible because I’ve eagerly been waiting for February 18th, 2022 when Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn will release in India.
