The recent release of the Bilkis Bano rapists has caused an uproar all over the country. The 11 convicts of the case were released and welcomed back into society as if they weren’t the ones who committed a gruesome crime and ruined a woman’s life forever. People have formed groups and are protesting against their release. One rape case that sent shivers down people’s spines was the 2012 Nirbhaya case. A dramatised version of the case called Delhi Crime was made and it went on to win an Emmy award in 2020, making it the first Indian show to win this prestigious award. In an exclusive interview with us, the cast of Delhi Crime featuring Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal and Tillotama Shome shared their thoughts on Bilkis Bano’s rapists being released and how this event adversely affects society and the victim both.

Shefali Shah has called the release ‘unpardonable’. She further said, “If somebody’s had the inhumanity of causing such kind of damage to anyone. I’m sorry. They don’t deserve any kind of levy or there’s no excuse for it. Rasika Dugal added, “It’s very disheartening to know that we live in a country in which justice is so fragile and it feels bad.” She also added that there is a plea in the Supreme Court and she hopes that justice prevails and it is a spark of hope today.

Tillotama Shome went on to say, “I think the system needs to be re-looked at. When something keeps breaking again and again and the results are not what you expect, and you feel terrible about the results, and you ask why did this happen again it is because the system hasn’t changed. She also went to say that what happened was ‘insane’.
