Exclusive: Team ‘Delhi Crime 2’ Speak About Unrealistic Beauty Standards, Shefali Says, “Dress Up For Yourself, Not Others.”

Body positivity. A very common but heavy term. While the term has gotten popular in social media over the past decade, it still is a very difficult concept for many people to live up to. After all, breaking through societal conditioning of years is hard. You can’t just wake up and decide to accept your body and love yourself just because body positivity is trending on Twitter, right? However, the best teacher is time, experience and exposure. At least the leading ladies of Delhi Crime 2: Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal and Tillotama Shome as they answer questions about unrealistic beauty standards and body positivity.

Shefali Shah talked about her opinion of unrealistic beauty standards. She said that it is a pressure that women put on themselves and men do too. She said it is a lot of pressure that we put on ourselves. She added that she doesn’t concern herself with this and has accepted that there are a team of very ridiculously talented people” that help her look that good. Shefali added that she herself has no interest in dressing in her personal life. Shefali said, “do it (dressing up) if it makes you happy. But do it for yourself.” Shefali said that there is no point stressing about what people think about your appearance saying, “Beauty and how you look at it negatively is in the eyes of the beholder.”

Rasika Dugal also brought up the effect these unrealistic beauty standards have on growing kids and teenagers. She said that because of social media, it is very easy for teenagers to develop unrealistic standards and expectations of their appearance. She said, “The teenagers who I interact with regularly, my nephews and nieces, the pressure on them is too much. And my heart really goes out to them.” She added that she wishes children can get to a place where they love themselves.

Tillotama Shome emphasised being comfortable with oneself. She said growing to be comfortable with yourself is a part of adulting. She said she feels like creating a space where people can learn to be comfortable with themselves. Tillotama added that when she was younger, straight hair was more popular than curly hair. However, she said she has learned to accept her hair and own it. She said, “if there’s one thing I want to change about me is to not apologize so much.”
