From ‘Mard’ To ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, Here Are 6 Famous Movies That Aged As Badly As Bread!

Sometimes over time, the perception and feeling that we have about a particular thing change with the wheels of time. This holds especially true when it comes to pieces of art, movies, tv shows, books and other forms of artistic expression. The easiest and perhaps, most astounding example of this was the fact that something as beloved and iconic as the work of Pablo Picasso was later, disliked and rejected. His painting known as ‘The Dream’ was labelled ‘schizophrenic’ by most psychologists as soon as psychology became popular.

In fact, Carl Jung, a well-known psychologist also went a step ahead and called his work, an “underworld form.” He also gave future artists a piece of advice, “Picasso’s work is something that was evil and did not belong in art galleries. As to the future Picasso, I would rather not try my hand at prophecy, for this inner adventure is a hazardous affair and can lead at any moment to a standstill or a catastrophic bursting asunder of the conjoined opposites!”

This occurs more easily with movies as the topics and subjects that these movies are built on tend to carry the mass viewpoints of the people in the past and hence, it’s very easy for them to not appeal to and in fact, offend people on the future. So, they obviously don’t age well.

Can’t think of any such movies? Here’s a list to jog your memory.

6 Iconic Movies That Aged Very Badly:

1. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

This movie was made at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community was beginning to develop freely. It brought a form of mainstream representation to the gay community but, now? It’s seen as thoroughly offensive and heavily toxic. It reiterates standards that have been used to measure gay people for centuries. It also hurts the sentiments of the people who fought for their rights to be used by cons like Chuck and Larry.

2. Rehna hai Tere Dil Mien

This movie, which was considered to be one of the most romantic movies of all time is now viewed for what it was which is toxic. This movie dared to teach people that it’s OK to be a stalker and to lie to women as well as manipulate them to win them over. It also pushed abusive and stalker-like standards which actually yielded results. This is a thought process that women have had to work hard to destroy, men don’t have to chase them or stalk them to start a relationship, talking to them and asking them for consent matters.

3. Me, Myself & Irene

This is one of the many funny movies which starred the iconic Jim Carrey. Back in the day, it was viewed as a thoroughly new concept and was tagged as the ‘funniest movie of the era’. But, as time passed, people realised that this movie didn’t come up with a new idea and just talked about Schizophrenia. The movie also creates chaos and humour at the expense of this mental disorder and ends up mocking the experience of the people who have to go through this, daily.

4. Mard

A lot of people idealised this movie and Amitabh Bachchan’s character in it for a very long time but, according to me, this is probably the most toxic movie ever because it literally birthed a culture of toxic masculinity. With dialogues like “Mard ko dard nahi hota”, this movie became the bible on what it means to be a real man. It literally dehumanised men and spoke about how men don’t cry, get hurt or feel their emotions and further widened the gap between men and women. It has taken us generations to undo the damage that movies like this caused. I mean, we’re still literally working on it.

5. Sixteen Candles

This movie was once considered to be the epitome of romance but as we age and times changed, we realised there is a lot wrong with this movie. First of all, let’s talk about Long Duk Dong, he literally has no role in the movie except mocking Asians and reiterating Asian stereotypes, there are many other racist elements in the movie. Then, Ted had literally raped an intoxicated Caroline and somehow, everyone was just alright with it. They went on as if nothing really happened. How this movie turned into a cult classic is literally beyond my level of understanding.

6. Hum Saath Saath Hain

Finally, let’s come to the massive Indian hit that literally birthday ‘family goals’ for quite a few generations. A lot of people literally still love this movie and so, I might be offending a lot of people here. According to me, This movie shares toxic family standards. I mean, no family can stay this tight-knit, they literally shed their individuality to become a part of a family and this shouldn’t happen. After this movie, parents ended up expecting this level of obedience from their children which is pretty wrong.

At the end of the day, we have to realise that as the wheels of time turn, we get to learn more about the world around us and all our views change. So, no piece of art can literally appeal to every damn generation. It’s about time that we let go of the ‘iconic’ tags that the previous generations have attached to these titles and talk about the wrong messages that these movies are bringing forth with them, this matters more.
