5 Thoughts I Had While Listening To ‘Chaka Chak’ From The Upcoming ‘Atrangi Re’. It Was Surprisingly Good!

So I already spoke about the trailer of Atrangi Re and mentioned being interested but confused when I watched it. However, the trailer confused me enough to peak my intrigue and for me to kinda look forward to Atrangi Re’s release. T-Series has now uploaded a song from Atrangi Re, which fueled my interest in this movie even more. The song named ‘Chaka Chak’ has been composed by A R Rahman and sung by Shreya Ghoshal with the lyrics being done by Irshad Kamil. The music video features Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush. The song was uploaded 2 hours ago and has already garnered 8,30,913 views. Having watched the song multiple times myself, I have a few opinions to share about ‘Chaka Chak’ and I will make sure they are heard! So let us talk about the 5 thoughts I had while watching the music video of ‘Chaka Chak’ from Atrangi Re:

1. A Shreya Ghoshal and A R Rahman collab is not something we deserve but is definitely what the world needs right now. Shreya’s mellifluous voice paired with Rahman’s twist on a classic and traditional composition goes so well together. It somehow makes me feel connected to ‘Chaka Chak’ despite hearing it for the first time.

2. “Haaye chaka chak/Chaka chak hoon main/Tapti dupehri si/Ladki gilehri si/Meri jaisi chahiye/Tere jaise ko” are some of the lyrics from  ‘Chaka Chak’. As you can gather, it isn’t the most lyrically inspired song. I get that it is supposed to be a casual song to be danced on at sangeets but cmon…

3. I like Sara Ali Khan’s look in this music video. It is simple and with the natural makeup look and open hair, pretty easy to recreate too. ‘Chaka Chak’ is set in a household where Dhanush’s character is getting engaged and for an event happening at home amongst family, her look is appropriate. Not to mention that the bright neon pink and green stand out well against the background of white and sober colours the other characters have worn.

4. The choreography while simple is fun to watch. It might not be the most inspired but against the setting of ‘Chaka Chak’, it makes more sense compared to something more intricate or complicated. Like most of us would dance similarly (sans the background dancers) at a wedding or an event within the family. I like that despite being a Bollywood song, they have tried to keep it real.

5. I consulted a South Indian friend of mine and have been notified that the depiction of a South Indian wedding is very Bollywood. The stereotypes of what a South Indian wedding is like have been maintained throughout ‘Chaka Chak’. While the overall costumes are accurate, they are pretty stereotypical. Women in South Indian weddings tend to wear heavy zari sarees which is missing in the video. As much as I like Sara’s look, those bright neon colours would have been frowned upon in an actual South Indian wedding. Moreover, some of the rituals depicted are incorrect too.

I wouldn’t call ‘Chaka Chak’ an earworm but I am surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I like the simplicity of the setting and the character looks. There is nothing over-the-top about it and honestly? I prefer it that way.
